Windows XP/2003 install problem

The Mac forum is probably not the best place to ask a Windows-related question, but I figured most of you probably work with Windows too.

I have my server computer which has a one-year-old ASUS MB, 1.6GHz P4, etc. This was my main computer until last Christmas when I got a 2.4Ghz P4 and a new ASUS board. Anyway, the server used to run Windows XP and had been since I assembled it, this is important to remember. (I have also successfully installed Windows 2003 Server on the computer in the past just to experiment.)

A few months ago I wanted to do an install of Windows Server 2003 to run my website and for mail serving. The install started but after loading the drivers it would give me an error saying that it could not distinguish my hard drives. (I have two hard drives in the case.) I unplugged one, then it would just blue screen with a hardware error. So I tried a format and fixing the boot sectors. No help.

So I then just tried to put XP back on, now here's the thing... Windows XP was giving me the same errors!!! ::evil:: However, Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Server and Windows 98 will all install just fine (as well as any Linux variant I try). This is odd considering that XP was running fine on it it for a year, no problems at all.

I did some more testing with other hard drives, no help. I then tried my add-in ATA/100 IDE controller card (by Promise). With the other IDE controller card hooked to the hard drives, XP will install, but Win 2003 Server still will not.

I'm stumped and frustrated. Any ideas? I would think that if it were a true hardware error that all the OS's would have problems with my disk drives.

Does anyone know of good PC/Windows forums that may know an answer to this?

Might be a silly question, but why not just run a Linux distro on it? Esp. if you want to serve a website and mail.

Did you try low-level formats, zeroing the drive, etc.? I had a few issues downgrading some systems from XP Pro to 2000 Pro a while back, a good old low level format did wonders.

I did consider running Linux, I know how to setup Apache, FTP, and other services, but I get lost with BIND, mail and other stuff. I'm currently serving my site and email off Win2000 Server.... I was just curious what the problem might be.

How would I go about doing a low-level format like that? Just out of curiosity.

The best way is to download a utility from the hard-drive manufacturer's website. Figure out what brand yours is, then grab the utility from their site.

The 20gb Hitachi drive in the Dell Laptop we use at the office took about an hour to do though, so plan accordingly.
