Wiping the hard drive of my G5

I have been told by a mac tech that i need to wipe my hard drive.
After insterting the mac os x installation disc (number 1), the computer asks me to restart...which i do. But the process won't advance after this.
It jams in the "thinking/loading" screen.

I have tried booting it from the disc....by pressing alt/option and also c while powering up. This time it goes as far as asking me what language i want to install in but again....it goes no further.

What else can i do?
Is it the disc?

Cianbarrie:

Read up on this first: Apple OSX Install.

Is the INSTALL CD/DVD in good condition?
Is the machine in such a state where you HAVE TO wipe it clean?
What's the Problem?

EDIT: nixgeek... thx for completing my post! ;)

What disc are you using to install Mac OS X? Is it the disc that came with the Power Macintosh G5? Is it a retail Mac OS X disc set?

Well according to the Mac tech it is.... he told me that i needed to wipe the hard drive.
Basically the computer couldn't be on for more than 10 mins without crashing!!....

When you start up from the OSX disk that were shipped with your G5, Try Disk Utility:

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

Hi,

It seems that your Mac OS-X is infected by some virus. In this scenario you need to wipe your drive. Formatting is not good option for wiping a drive, you should use some drive wipe software such as Stellar disk wipe. This software wipes your drive permanently.

Whoa! Wait a sec. There are NO viruses out there that affect OS X. None. There are a handful of worms, most or all of which were not actually out "in the wild". The infection rate was extremely limited for the worms. There are a few trojan horses (is it four, five now?). Again, very limited.

With the Mac, we don't think "virus" first thing. Or "spyware". Slow Windows machine, pop-up windows, etc. Sure. It's likely a nasty malware infestation. And likely impossible to clean up without erase and install.

But with the Mac, unlikely. In fact, I read a thread for (I believe) the very first time on these boards that someone got suckered by the trojan that messes with DNS. You catch that one by going to certain porno sites and agreeing to download a "codec" to supposedly allow you to watch a video. Don't agree to download anything from questionable sites.

Just use Disk Utility: open it and select the volume you need to "wipe", click on Erase, click on Security Options and select 7 Pass Erase.(which meets the US
Dept. of Defense standard for securely erasing hard disks)

Disk Utility is more than adequate for the job - there is no need to purchase unneeded extra software to wipe your drive.

Hands up all those who clicked OK to accept the "codec" download .... ;)
