Wireless network hardware advice needed

Re: member
Have moved into our new house at last! Anyway... my studio with 2 x Macs and a laptop PC is upstairs (3rd floor) running off a network with DSL. Which is great.

My other half wants the iMac LCD (700Mhz) setup on the ground floor.

Of course, this will need to use the DSL and network... soooo....

I don't really want to fork out £200 ($260??) for an Airport connection which isn't mission critical.

Are there cheaper alternatives that anyone is using for the Mac (i.e. Belkin's and Buffalo's wireless hardware etc.)?

Thnx cbix...

Ideally I would just need to purchase a wireless hub/switch since I have a decent dsl router already. I could then attach the wireless hub/switch/transmitter to the router (or corresponding hub/switch) and transmit to the iMac downstairs... I guess I can get any wireless hub/switch/transmitter since it'll be platform independent, but, which receiver do I purchase for the iMac... would an Airport card receive from a transmitter other than an Airport base unit, or will I have to purchase another type of receiver? (bearing in mind the only available ports on the iMac are USB, Firewire, no PCI).

Going by other discussions on here it sounds like airport cards are compatible with other 802.11b/g base stations. Can't see why not!

I remember reading that macs with an airport card can run as a base station with software. Does anyone know if this would work in a cross platform wireless network. Also, I take it that you have to have a newer mac for an AE card, I'm thinking I could only run Airport in my Sawtooth G4? And could I use a generic PCI/USB 802.11b/g device with my G4? Does the soft base station work with non-Apple cards?

Sorry about all the questions, I know that Airport is basically just 802.11 but there was some stuff that I wasn't sure about. Danke.

Never heard of a software version enabling a Mac into a base station before! Sounds good. That could suit me (put a card in my G4 and make it a station)... connect with another card from my iMac...

The problem is, I wouldn't want much processing power taken from my G4 since I'll be using it for daily work.
