Wireless networking failure

I desperately need some advice, assistance, mass amounts of advil, etc. I have spent the past week trying to get my new iMac G5 to play nicely with my old (June 04) Airport Extreme, but alas, they insist on being enemies. I can connect the iMac directly to the Internet, but when I try to do a wireless connection it all goes wrong. Right now my airport and computer are only inches away from one another, so I know it's not a signal failure. I have tried all the suggestions from the Apple website for setting up wireless Internet, but still get nowhere. Thoughts, comments, suggestions???

You're going to need to help us a little more than I've tried all the suggestions - we need to know all the specifics! For example, have you used the Extreme base station for wireless before? What settings do you have in Network > Airport? Are you sure you got the optional Airport card in your G5? Have you tried ethernet through the Airport Extreme BS? You could give us a link to the page at Apple that you followed, for example.

Okay, lets see if I can remember all things attempted:
Have tried both soft and hard resetting of airport using this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451
Tried turning off "Distribute IP Addresses"
Tried Airport Assistant and Network utility.
Tried reconfiguring airport so many times, it could very well be on the wrong settings.

Yes, I have used this airport before, but not with this computer. I do have an airport card, it says this:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87)
Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: 4.80.76.1
Current Wireless Network: Martian Particles
Wireless Channel: 6

Right now my computer is connected directly to the Internet, so I can't tell you what the latest settings are that I've tried with the airport.

Does that help?? I'll answer a billion questions if it will get my wireless working!

Hi Tina,

I recently had troubles making my wireless play nice, and turning off the security helped (although it was an irritating way to fix the issue).

In general though, at what point does the connection fail? Do you see the network in the list in the airport menu on the iMac? Des it start to connect?

ora

Does the Airport Extreme have the latest v5.7 firmware? Mine is OK with this, but I had terrible trouble with connections using v5.6 and reverted to v5.5.1 for a while.

Took a deep breath and installed 5.7 last year sometime and it's been OK.

Thanks to all who helped - problem has been solved. Turning off the security seemed to help, but mostly we just kept restarting the heck out of everything!
