does anyone know of a tool that is free that can convert .wma to mp3?
a friend of mine was trying to give me some mp3's but when he stuck it in his computer, he assumed that when he converted cd's in windows media player that it made them mp3s. It makes them wma so I need to convert them to mp3's anything would help, even if it is not free, but preferably something free.

If I recall correctly, Windows Media Player will have most people screaming in horror when they realize:

When Windows Media Player rips CDs... it's protects them with a license that can only be played back on that same computer using Windows Media Player... (I'm not 100% sure of this but I was unsucessful at getting WMAs from my friend's computer he ripped from CDs).

I don't recall but, try to make Audio CDs from Windows Media Player (that is, if it that computer has a CD Burner), and just re-rip 'em from your computer.

HTH Good Luck...

What? Microsoft products using hidden proprietary formats? Unheard of... :)

When I was stuck in the Windows world I used MusicMatch to convert files to mp3 from wma. From your sig I am assuming that you are on a Mac, so this may or may not help -- I am not sure if MusicMatch will do what you want from the Macintosh world. Uh, no, wait:
The Jukebox for the Mac is not available for download at the moment, but will be back in action very soon. Please check back often.

So that won't work...

I have 4 pc's and I used to have 4 macs I only have 3 right now, but as soon as a tibook comes available, I will have 4 macs. Anyways, is musicmatch free or does it cost something? Do you have a link where I can get it? and will it work in vpc?

Once it makes it to download, you'll find it here.

I got it on a Macworld CD, and I tossed it out after a quick look. The only thing I ever used it for was to burn CDs with Windows, and now that I have iTunes, I don't need its ugly look any more

I completely agree on the ugly bit. But it does convert between WAV and MP3 and WMA (and maybe OGG, but I've never used that so I didn't try).

There are two versions -- basic (I think) and plus. Basic is free, and does all that I needed, which is basically file conversion. Plus is $19.95 and has stuff that I would never use. More details can be found on the main website.

It might work in a vpc environment -- I don't have the environment so I can't say for sure.

This may sound stupid but to convert a Windows Media Streaming Audio file to an MP3 i played it in Windows Media and hit the record button in my Audio Application. Worked pretty good. Granted it probably wont be perfect but if everything else fails.
