X11 and Programs

The Late: SuperMacMod
Complete newby in Unix or X11. Been using Macs for years but never ventured into this.

I just installed X11 and OpenOffice an a G4 PowerBook. Everything went well. Both work fine.

Trying to install XChat. Reading it says I need GTK. Downloaded both and tried to install, but don't know what I'm doing here and could use some help. XChat can't be found after I installed it.

On http://www.opendarwin.org, there are 3 GTK packages
gtk.dmg
gtk2.dmg

Which should I be using, and exactly what should I be doing to install.

Keep it simple, like me :)
Thanks for any help.

You might as well install both of the GTK, they are different versions, but both can be installed at the same time. For the install just use the standard install package thats on the dmg. All the applications from DarwinPorts install under /usr/local, so you'll find xchat under /usr/local/bin.

Must be doing something wrong, still can't find XChat after installing the twp GTK packages and XChat.

Where is "usr/local/bin"

I don't see anything like "usr on my system. Did a find and came up empty.

"/usr/local/bin/" is an invisible directory in the root directory of your hard drive.
To access the program, you need to open XTerm, and type '/usr/local/bin/xchat'. I believe this is the correct command, but I decided to go the Fink route, so I'm not certain. Hope this helped
