X11 doesn't open

Greetings!
My X11 doesn't launch. It appears to do so when the icon is clicked, but when the arrow turns into an 'X' before the xterm window is due to appear, the program suddenly quits. It is version 1.0 running on Mac OS 10.3.5. I have tried several reinstalls and reboots to no avail.

I've started to hone in on the problem a bit. The problem is fixed if I remove the .xinitrc file. I also tried including the .xinitrc file with every line commented out, and the problem returns. Also, the .Xmodmap and .Xresources files do not exist... are they created manually? I installed fink recently and they do not seem to be automatically generated.
