X11 will not launch applications

I have used X11 daily since it came on the scene and recently have a problem with launching applications. Each time I try and launch a new Eterm window, the window appears briefly and then disappears. All other existing X11 windows are fine but I cannot launch a new terminal session on any host, local or remote. The only solution is to reboot the machine! A logout/login is not sufficiennt. This problem does not appear after a fresh reboot but will eventually surface, sometimes within hours, sometimes not until days have passed.

The console reports different errors, most recently

bash: no job control in this shell
stty: stdin isn't a terminal

It is not inconceivable that I have made some changes in a .bashrc file but this problem appears no matter which machine I am pointing at, i.e., a remote session on any machine of the many I use will show the same symptoms, even across operating systems. I have not made any changes to .xinitrc that I can recall but will no swear to this--this problem has arisen gradually over the past weeks to months but is getting really annoying. Sometimes it is exaccerbated by changing network connection, e.g., from wire to wireless. But its onset is very variable.

Any ideas out there?

Rob
P.S. X11 really is the most disappointing application I use and certainly the worst one that Apple makes for OSX.
