Xbox, Revolution, or PS3?

I've realised today that the only console I"m actually excited about is the Nintendo Revolution. In my opinion, The Revolution is the only console that is truly Next Gen (mind you, I dont know much about the PS3, so I'm really only comparing it to Xbox360).

The PS1 and N64 were next gen because they brought true 3D games to the console. However, in my humble opinion, in the next wave on consoles (Xbox 1, PS2, Gamecube), the Xbox was the only truly next gen unit. While the PS2 and Gamecube merely upgraded their graphics hardware, the Xbox took it to the next level by adding Internet play out-of-the-box, and a media centre (although media centre was only possible after a mod -- but still, the HDD is what made this possible).

Now in the newest wave - Xbox360, PS3, and Revolution -- from what I know so far, the Revolution sounds to me like it will be the only system worthy of next gen status.

While the Xbox 360 is a very impressive system with a CPU and GPU to die for, and a very slick interface, it is still an Xbox with a facelift. Don't get me wrong; the Xbox360 is a worthy puchase, and is version 2.0 (and not "Xbox 1.5" like some are saying), but there is a difference between an entirely new, updated console, and a Next Gen console.

Nintendo are the only ones that have decided to take gameing to the next level, with their amazing new controller. Good graphics are nice, but next gen consoles should not merely take graphics to a new level, but the gameplay also. Console and game developers seem to have forgotten about gameplay in recent years, so I'm so glad Nintendo have gone back to their roots.

I've found the last few years quite upsetting, seeing the Nintendo slowly go down the tubes. Hopefully this brilliant new concept will rocket them back to the top.

Which system are you must excited about?
 
I agree with you. Sony and MS have no vision. We've had two generations of 3D consoles now, same as we had for 2D (well, more if you count old Ataris, I suppose). The SNES and the GameCube/PS2 were basically upgraded versions of their predecessors, but they were REALLY upgraded. After two generations, though, there's not much more you can do.

Nintendo gets this, and they're really doing something new. They're the only one doing anything new. I doubt we'll see any games on PS3 and Xbox 360 that honestly couldn't have been done on their predecessors; they'll basically just look better. That's it. The SNES opened a ton of new doors gameplay-wise. The PSX/N64 did, too (obviously!). So did the PS2/GameCube. But releasing the PS3 and Xbox 360 is like if Nintendo had released another 2D console after the SNES.

I'm bummed that Nintendo isn't giving as much attention to graphics as the others, though. Last I heard, Revolution won't support HD graphics, which is really a big thing. I hope Nintendo snaps to their senses before it's too late. Higher resolution makes a HUGE difference. Just try playing the 640x480 version of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on GameCube and then going back to the original 320x240 version on N64. It's shocking.
 
yeah, I heard about the HD thing too, bummer :(

But at the same time they are saying the Revolution will only be $200, so they needed to cut costs. I'm not sure what it's like in other parts of the globe, in the Australia it is taking a loooong time for high def to penetrate the market. They dont expect it to happen for at least another couple of years. Therefore, I think most people wouldn't care if it doesn't have HD, and Nintendo are banking on this.

By the time enough people have HD, the next generation consoles will be out (or maybe Nintendo wil create a "revolution HD" or something?)

I actually get quite colstrophobic playing FPS games on consoles, because I'm so used to the highres PC or Mac displays.
 
I have been loyal to Nintendo since the NES, and have never strayed :) Even though I never bought a Gamecube, I think I might get a Revolution. It is definately exciting!
 
I'd have to agree. Of the new generation of game consoles, the only one I'm actually eager to try out is the Revolution. I'm not a big gamer, and I sort of see the XBox 360 and PS3 as being more powerful and up to date versions of existing machines. They're basically games machines like the ones we have today, just with better performance and specs.

But the Revolution is a real rethink of what a game console should be like in terms of the way you actually use it, and that is why its the only one I'm actually eager to try out.
 
yep, right there with you symphonix. I'm egar to try it too.

I'm really not a console gamer, because I love first person shooters, which are hopeless with gamepads. The revolution could change all that, bringing a freedom of movement that could surpass the trusty keyboard and mouse.

Frankly, games suck at the moment. FPS have been done to death, and can't seem to innovate past their current point. In fact, they're going backwards a bit, with new games like COD2 becoming hugely scripted. Platformers have been carbon copies of Mario 64 for years, and sporting games are now about as realistic as you can get with a gamepad.

Hopefully the revolution really can change the way games are played. Hopefully it will open the floodgates of entirely new kinds of gaming genres, and enhance the existing ones.
