I saw this on the Powermac G4 sales page. Think it might be possible that the Xserve could be replaced with this Powermac in server form, or do you think they'll be sold side-by-side?
apple has never made rack servers before - only big tower servers (and a few heavy duty ones).... Xserve now offers customers servers in the industry-standard rack style. The PowerMac server definitely will not replace the half year old Xserve!!!!!
I belive Apple currently sells and will still sell BOTH the Xserve and Tower based Servers... not one replacing another because different networks need different types of servers...
We jumped the gun and made a new Tower into a Server... heh
Xserve: Data centres (if they want Macs), file servers in larger companies, audio systems (great for that).
PowerMacintosh G4 Server: Graphics offices, law firms and the like. Although I guess they won't sell many of those, but basically they are just PowerMacs with more stuff.
They're just not for the same thing, although you could use them for the same thing. See? Simple.
I read some where... cant remeber where that... that one of the big complaints with the xServe was that they only have 3 pci slots, and no bundled raid software. The previous line of power mac g4 servers had both.
Xserve does have software raid. It was developed for big environmentally controlled computer rooms. Two blowers and a fan in the power supply make it too noise to put in a office.
The tower server is for classroom and small businesses that do not have or need a computer room.
Tower serves the traditional Apple market. The Xserve is Apple's push into business again.
