Xserve hardware baseline ??

Do any of you in this forum have opinions on configuration of Xserve hardware and OS combinations from the standpoint of establishing a baseline configuration that is the most desireable for all around computing services?

For example: Is there a more stable of release the OS that works really well with a particular hardware config.

I currently only have a dual proc Xserve and 10.2.1 here. So far it has been plenty stable, but I am attempting to define a hardware baseline for future expansion. I felt it was a question worth asking to avoid discovering any known quirks that could crop up in future installations.

Is there a version of OS X server that is preferred in the community? One that perhaps has the least number of reported bugs, that provides better transfer speed. I mean I haven't run into much trouble with 10.2.1 but is there better available?

Do dual proc systems really perform better than single, if you are only serving files?

Is there a configuration that provides more hardware flexability? What about hardware redundancy?

This seems like a place that I could find someone with more than one system installed and perhaps could prevent working through "growing pains" if someone had already resolved them.

I am just looking for opinions about what configurations have been most successful in the real world.
