Yahoo Messenger problems

Wondering if anyone can help me figure out what's going on with YM. I am running a G4 Quicksilver, OS 10.4... and have tried downloading several different versions of YM and can't get a single one to work on this. The closest I've gotten is version 3.0 beta 1, build 18274.

With that version I get the sign-in window, am able to put in my handle and password... then it bogs down from there, acts like it's logging in, but never opens to the buddy list... BUT, it connects enough that the alert comes up to tell me that I have X number of emails waiting in my yahoo mail acct by the same handle. Every other version of YM I've tried does not get that far. They will not open at all.

This is the first time I've ever had this problem. YM works on my Pismo just fine, which is running 10.4, as well, though I did have to hunt down a version that would work with it. The Pismo's down right now, however. Have to open it up and replace some stuff when I get the time and $$.

Thank you.

Raven

Yahoo Messenger 3.x are still in beta but they list 10.4 as a compatible OS...
What version of 10.4 do you have? If it's anything less than 10.4.11 it would be good to udpate to that version so the system will be up to date.
Is the 10.4.x version the same on your Pismo?

There could be something corrupt with the preference file. So let's try this: in Finder, go to HD/Users/YOURUSER/Library/Preferences. In this folder there will be a preference file or a folder for each application. As the app seems to come from yahoo, it will probably be called something like com.yahoo.messenger.plist. When the messenger is not running, drag it to your desktop (it can be deleted later).
Restart the messenger - will it run now?

Thanks for answering my post, Giaguara. Yeah, that was my first thought... the preferences, so I dumped everything in there having to do with YM... tried that several times over the last couple of months.... but it didn't help. This is really puzzling me. Usually I can noodle this kind of thing out eventually, but this one's got me stumped.

On both the Pismo and the Quicksilver I'm running 10.4. Wanted to update to 10.4.11 on the Quicksilver, but alas, being out in rural Podunkville NM I'm still on dialup, and when I checked it said that it would take something like 36 hours to do the download upgrade, lmao. (Assuming I didn't get dumped in the process... which would mean back to square one again.) Am unemployed right now (business I worked at folded last fall, and the economy is in the tank in these parts these days) so I can't afford to buy an update disk off ebay right now. As soon as I'm able, I'm going to do that, though.

As stated in my first post, the Pismo is down right now. It had a HDD crash last fall (running 10.4.11 at the time), so I popped it open and replaced it, and it was running fine, complete with a working version of YM, though I only had an install for 10.4 to put back on it... then in Dec. it crashed again. This time I'm thinking it is probably the processor. Hope that's all. In the mean time, I've only got the Quicksilver, which was mainly ever used just to dink around off line with, so am trying to get it set up fully for online use. Which includes a finding a functioning version of YM.

Sooo, what's Plan-B? Lol. :^)

Plan B = if you don't need the video option there (as you're with less bandwidth, I guess that could be the case) you could try another messenger that also supports Yahoo protocol.
Of these, my favorite is Adium - http://adium.im/ and it's free.
