Glad it resolved it. I'm not sure who likes using stage manager. For the last 5+ years, each year Apple seems to be trying to merge iOS and macOS to be the same thing, say over 10-15 year period. Stage manager seems to mirror more of the iPad experience. Not sure who would want to use that...

So if you enable "Show in Menu Bar", then go to your menu bar and look there.

If you don't have the stage manager menu bar enabled, you can enable it and toggle in the menu bar. What you describe with windows flying over the left side of the screen when you switch apps is stage manager enabled. The icon has a box with 3 verticals dots beside it, as shown in the image.

Is it enabled up here?

Did you check to see if stage manager is activated? A different setting than the one above.
