Insight into gcc, zlib, etc. on recent builds?

The PB developer tools are meant for the PB. THey work on the PB. If you got a later build than PB legally then you would already have working developer tools. OS X final includes working developer tools in the box.

Switching between OS 9 and X

Installing OS X on the same partition as OS9 is a bad idea because OSX is a beta OS and as such is quite difficult to uninstall or fix when it goes wrong. It's best to keep it sealed off from OS9 by putting it on an entirely different partition. Also, keeping 2 systems on 1 disk is a...

    Experimental MySQL.pkg double-click installer

Ho hum... I got apache to compile with mod_perl fine this morning. Not sure exactly how I did it, but it worked fine. I don't remember doing anything out of the ordinary. PHP 4.0.3 has a problem that prevents it from building on OS X. However, I can tell you that 4.0.5-dev works fine, and...

    debug code?

It's not just the case that it's debugging code, it's that the code hasn't been OPTIMIZED yet :) Well, inside Apple it has, but not for the public yet. You can expect to see performance gains when the final version is released. And that person talking about single user mode obviously has no...

    MacOS X Sucks

uhm... OS X doesn't "suck" in my opinion. Mac OS X does support things. It supports the myriad of programs for Mac OS 9 and below via Classic and with some work via Carbon. Any NeXTStep/OpenStep apps should work on it with some porting. And last, but by no means least, it supports most UN*X...

    Darwin 1.2.1 is for what?

Actually, there are minor differences between the CoreOS of Mac OS X and Darwin (e.g. drivers that Apple doesn't own the source to and so can't OpenSource, etc). It's not recommended that you replace the entire distro with Darwin, but you can easily recompile the kernel (xnu) and swap it into...

how do i access my computer from the road?

ok, this is basically what you need to know: You can get access to the command-line interface on your computer if you compile and install SSH 2.3.0 as per the instructions on http://www.stepwise.com (or if you just enable SSHSERVER=-YES- in hostconfig, but you might need to generate some keys...

Cube + MacOS X ? (Is this machine enough?)

    1) Not AFAIK. 2) Yes. 3) The RAGE 128 is fine. 4) I think most monitors should work OK from OS X. 5) This is unclear, how should anybody know this yet, OS X isn't finished. You can always back up your home dir or something. 6) This question is unclear, but by May OS X final should be out so...
