    Putting Tbook to sleep..

That said, it is OK to keep the powerbook in sleep mode. Actually, I hardly ever shutdown my tibook. Its on during work and when we are both tired, we go to sleep :)

    Putting Tbook to sleep..

Sleep mode draws power in proportion to the amount of RAM you have on your book. It has to keep the RAM alive after all, right? You'll notice a dip in battery level if you leave the book in sleep for, say, over the week end.

    Speakable Items problem ..

Hi, My speech commands window is completely empty, even though "{Home}/Library/Speech/Speakable Items" folder exists and contains commands! I'm unable to find references to any such bug at Apple. My configuration is a new Powerbook G4 667, 10.1, with new security update installed.

    It's HERE: iPod

I said it in some other thread, but I thought it may help here - those neodymium earphones don't look (by spec) cheap. beef's $5 estimate I think is probably under by a factor of 15 to 20! But I want options! I want options! Take away those snazzy earphones and I'll buy the thing for drei...

    Dock Location & iPod Polls

Dock: I like it on the left and visible. Though bouncing icons don't make any sense, but I get more vertical room on my 800x600 ibook screen. iPod: Cool! I'm not sure it is too expensive. Many manufacturers don't pay much attention to details. If you noticed the Neodymium magnet earphones...

    You All are wrong!!!!! :)

I know this is all going to be resolved in a few minutes, but just for the record, remember Steve Jobs saying "We've been doing a lot of work with these guys lately" with Palm rep (CEO?) on stage? And what did we get for that? We haven't even seen a "Palm desktop" on OSX yet! My guess would...

    ® MAC OS X editing ®

General warning: Don't do something if you're unprepared to bear its consequences! Fiddling with NIB files can make your app useless! That said, I want to point out (in addition to the tiff and pdf file resources) that a lot of the interface details of Cocoa apps may be found in their .nib...

    HFS vs UFS speed

Hi OzX-ers, Has anyone done a speed comparison between HFS and UFS file system implementations on 10.1? Which is faster? I know about the functionality differences between them, but if you're setting up OSX by itself without 9.2.1, would anyone recommend one over the other for speed?

    once OSX.1 comes out...

If you're going to need Classic support in OSX, it is best to keep one partition for 9.1/2. This partition is easily updated to 9.2 using the 9.2 updater from Apple. I suggest updating to 9.2 because I found that I could finally use Classic, given than I formatted my OSX partition as UFS. You...

How can I create a double click icon to run script shell

If you have the Developer tools, you can try using MRJAppBuilder to build a double clickable Java application, given the class files, jars, parameters, etc. Its quite easy to use. There is some way to do this by creating a bundle directory, hmmm something to learn everyday...

FTP - Sooooooo slowwwww on OSX/OS9

I don't know if you've considered this, but anyway, there is a setting in Fetch preferences that lets you specify a buffer size for transfers. Setting this number to a larger buffer size (like 128K) significantly speeds up FTP transfers. Well, at least that's the way it was for me. I don't...

Mail accounts lost after 10.0.4 upgrade

Hi guys, I've had the same problems and more! 1. I couldn't access my archived mail all on a sudden. Neither were my mail accounts right. I found that Mail was putting its stuff under ~/Library/Mail (it was ~/MailAccounts and ~/Mailboxes before). I can access my old Mail settings now after...

    is it unix or cripplix?

I guess I was too enthusiastic to expect new unices to support the open group's word on what's a unix. I obviously need to broaden my unix platform exposure. Thanks for highlighting that.

    Disk image mount problem

HI all. Has anyone here faced a case when standard .dmg images used to distribute X software (Omniweb, VNC, etc.) are unmountable? The CRC doesn't fail, but the disk is declared unreadable and OSX offers to initialize it or eject it. I have OSX with dev tools installed.

    SSH?

http://www.peak.org/next/apps/internet/ssh/macosx/ssh-2.0.12-P-b.gnutar.gz It untars into a .pkg bundle, which you can double click and install. You have to be logged in as root, though.
