i have a imac g3 and when i put in a disc only a question mark and a smiley face thing comes out

i don't now why it wont install but this message comes up "select a destination disk to install the mac OS X software". It has a new 120GB hardware with nothing on it. Its a universal full installation CD. It is a blank hard drive it does not have any mac software in it.
