You're thinking slightly in the wrong paradigm for Mac OS X. :) Mac OS X is based on a BSD core, which in turn is based on UNIX ideas. One of these ideas is that rather than attempting to allocate RAM as applications request it, we grab a bunch and cache it. This way, RAM is already ready...

Yep! It's great -- on my iBook 500 which formerly just kind of plodded through visualization, things are much smoother now. Much better framerates. Used to hover around 17-20, now it's routinely at 28-32.
