Attempts to use Dictation in a MSWord document doesn't work. I'm using a 2012 iMac 27" with OS X Mavericks. Using the keyboard shortcut--fn key x 2--correctly enters Dictation and the icon appears but speaking produces no typing in the document. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks.

Many thanks to all for your helpful suggestions. I'll try the target disk mode option, but I really don't think the laptop powers on at all. If that's the case, I think I can take out the hard drive and connect it in some way as an external drive. Thanks again.
