Dictation doesn't work with Mavericks

Attempts to use Dictation in a MSWord document doesn't work. I'm using a 2012 iMac 27" with OS X Mavericks. Using the keyboard shortcut--fn key x 2--correctly enters Dictation and the icon appears but speaking produces no typing in the document. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks.
 
MS Word doesn't support every OS X feature. It is Microsoft, after all :D
Is OS X dictation supposed to work in Word?
