Thanks Giaguara for the response.... yes I do have them stored elsewhere. However after about 2 days (on and off) of system hanging the photo's are not on the desktop nor are they in the trash can. Also no indication of them being deleted. They just appear to be churning around in the system...

Thanks Satcomer .... however because of Finder Freezing (coloured wheel constantly spinning) I can't get in to System Preferences. Tried PRAM reset, and also Repair HD and Repair Permissions by using Installation Disk 1. But system still hanging.
