IMac Hanging and Finder not responding

I am running the following system:

Apple Macintosh (Intel)
MODEL iMAC
PROC 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
RAM 1 GB 667 MHZ DDR2 SDRAM
DRIVE 300 GB

The hanging appears to have been caused when I accidently moved about 40GB of old photo's onto my desktop. Almost immediately I tried to cancel but all that happened is that the system has hung. Processer can be heard working in the background.

Being new to MAC I am pretty stumped.

Does anyone know a way I can get in and stop this process say at start up? Have tried the obvious forced restart using the power on/off button but know luck.

Thanks

Startup items are kept in System Preferences->Accounts. Highlight your account and then select the tab "Login Items".

Thanks Satcomer .... however because of Finder Freezing (coloured wheel constantly spinning) I can't get in to System Preferences. Tried PRAM reset, and also Repair HD and Repair Permissions by using Installation Disk 1. But system still hanging.

If you have those 40 GB of photos also somewhere else than on your desktop, you could log in single user mode and delete teh items on your desktop...

Thanks Giaguara for the response.... yes I do have them stored elsewhere. However after about 2 days (on and off) of system hanging the photo's are not on the desktop nor are they in the trash can. Also no indication of them being deleted. They just appear to be churning around in the system .... hence the hanging and Finder not responding.
Being new to MAC I am not sure of my competence to move around in command lines yet. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated as this is really frustrating !!
