    .metadata_never_index

Recently it seems that every time I reboot the system (usually after a software update), Spotlight does not work. The search box pops up, but no answers are displayed for anything that is typed. If I examine the root folder, I find that there is a .metadata_never_index file there; if I remove it...

Search for files without a label

OK, so I defined the smart folder with the following criteria (I aded line breaks to make it easier to read (the last criteria is created less than 15 days ago): (true) && (((kMDItemContentTypeTree = public.movie) && (kMDItemFSLabel = 0) &&...

Search for files without a label

Is there a way to search for files within a folder tree that have a specific label or, more what I want, that do not have a label at all? I have a folder tree that contains a large number of files, a small number of which do not have a Finder label assigned, but I cannot convince the folder...

    Snow Leopard Mail and Exchange

There is setting to save sent email on the server (set) and when to remove sent email (never). After some experimentation I have determined the following: 1. For Exchange 2007 accounts, Mail saves a WIP copy of the message in the Drafts folder for that account at various points; not...

    Snow Leopard Mail and Exchange

I was thrilled to see Exchange support in Mail/Snow Leopard, but I am less than thrilled with the experience! I should note that my first tests were to set this up as an Exchange 2007 account; I have not yet attempted to use the Exchange IMAP type account, but shall try that later. Setting it...

    System reboot oddity

I have an external drive that I use to hold my Parallels virtual machines, so naturally I named the file system on that drive "Parallels". This works fine, except when I need a reboot. Immediately after a fresh reboot when I open Parallels it indicates that it cannot find any of my VMs! A quick...

Have Apple Mail forget an old email address

If it were anatomically possible, I would kick myself in the behind!

Have Apple Mail forget an old email address

How can I convince Apple Mail to forget about an old address when suggesting addresses as part of auto-completion? I do not wish to turn this feature off, just have one specific address removed. A specific instance might explain the reason for this better. I had an old email address for an...

    Spotlight forgets privacy

I have even attempted the mechanism I located that indicated the following command should work -- it does for the first external drive, but not the second! sudo defaults write /Volumes/History/.Spotlight-V100/_IndexPolicy Policy -int 3

    Spotlight forgets privacy

I have two external drives which I do not wish Spotlight to index. I add both drives to the privacy list in the system preference panel, but every time I reboot (usually for a system update), Spotlight ties up my computer for several hours indexing these two drives again!!!!!! How do I...

    Tracking down a performance problem

OK, I killed the "mdworker" and was then able to execute the command to disable and remove the Spotlight files on the two volumes. I shall keep an eye on this and see if the problem returns or persists. Still do not understand why privacy/no-index settings are being lost so frequently.

    Tracking down a performance problem

Oops. It seems that it is the "mds" process that is reporting these errors. I killed it and it was relaunched, but had lost the privacy settings. It is currently still indexing the larger drive, and there is not "mdimport" running. I am waiting until the indexing is complete before I attempt...

    Tracking down a performance problem

First, I had already dragged the drives to the Privacy list, and the names were there. Despite that, the system still seems to be indexing. From your two references I took the following steps: I did this for both volumes, as noted, and it reported that indexing and searching was disabled...

    Tracking down a performance problem

One thing I do notice in the "All Messages" log is this line being repeated constantly every 4-5 seconds. From the information displayed i have no idea where to look for this problem.29/10/08 4:12:04 PM 29-Oct-2008 mds[36] (Error) Import: importer:0x84b600 Importer start failed for -2...

    Tracking down a performance problem

I have an issue with my 24" Intel iMac, now running Mac OS 10.5.5 -- from time to time the system becomes extremely unresponsive. Even normal booting and regular usage on this system seems a bit slower than others seem to report, but from time to time it simply fails to respond -- often without...
