I have the 500 MHz version of the final iMac G3 design. They don't have a fan, I've taken mine apart several times. The sound (if it's a high pitched whir) you're hearing is probably the drive beginning to fail. Happened to mine, I'd back up your data and start looking for a replacement drive.

Nope, PC motherboards don't have the ADC slot (infront of the AGP slot) for the video card to plug into.

Go for the 12" 32meg video model. The 12" screen looks alot crisper than the 14" (IMHO). Also I beleive (not 100% sure) that the older Mobility Radeon didn't fully support Quartz Extreme but the Radeon Mobility 7500 does, so it should have noticably better graphics performance.
