This happens pretty intermittently, but sometimes upon startup neither the keyboard or trackpad work. I usually use a bluetooth mouse/keyboard when I'm at work so dont experience this issue there. I'm on a intel based macbook pro running 10.5.4. This problem just popped up in the last few weeks...

It is a laptop. Figured it out though. In System Preferences | Keyboard & Mouse | Keyboard the "Use all F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys" needs to be enabled.
