Found the answer on www.docs.info.apple.com --needed to go into Disk Utilities and repair permissions on the start up volume. It worked perfectly. Whew!

Hello, I suspect that everytime I agree to one of apple's security upgrades I run into some problems-- I did this a few days ago and everything was fine at first! This problem happened a few upgrades ago and by deleting something like an OSX prefernce file it was solved. I just don't know what...
