    Frustrations with OS X

Sidenote is great!!! Thanks for the heads-up. I'm still not sure whether I want to use it instead of a notebook app, but for note taking, it's as good as I've ever seen. Thanks again, Dale

    Frustrations with OS X

I don't agree with most of this. If you're going to make something freeware, most likely you can dig around the Internet and find yourself an icon to "borrow" -- asking permission if necessary. Or use some icon built into the system, as I did with most of the GTK stuff I wrote on my Red Hat...

SideNote...I will check that out when I get home today! Thanks! Dale

    Frustrations with OS X

OK, thanks for the tip. I will give it a try. I haven't messed with TextEdit enough to know what it's about. Dale

    Frustrations with OS X

It's actually CONTROL instead of COMMAND for those two...I do believe those are emacs keys, but I'm a vim guy so I wouldn't know. :D Dale

    Frustrations with OS X

Well, first off, let me say that I love my new iMac, my first Mac ever. It's beautiful. I love OS X, for the most part. It's run flawlessly -- I think I've only had to kill an app once in the month or so I've had it. iTunes, iPhoto -- best of their kind. Safari is a really nice browser and...

Remote-X not working (MacOS as Client)

Thomas, you may have already covered this, but just to be sure, make sure the X11 app is actually running on your Mac while you're trying this stuff. That's what happened to me...I had everything up and running one day, then the next day, nothing was working, even though I was 90% sure I had it...

What applications to use with X11? Suggestions and reviews

I'm coming from using Linux full-time at work and home, so I do miss a number of apps, including a few that I wrote in Perl-Gtk2. To use those, I've been ssh'ing to my Linux box and opening them on here. Seems to work well enough, aside from things like tray icons, of course. Gimp has come...

    Safari -- Firefox CTRL-ENTER equivalent?

Thanks for the tip kainjow...Sogudi doesn't seem to have it, but maybe one of the others (e.g. Stand) does. Dale

Air Tunes -- Airport Express only?

It does sound like a good deal for all it has...I just wish the Air Tunes component was somehow separated since I already have both a router and a wireless access point. I actually did look into getting the electrician we had working on our house last weekend install speaker cable, but the...

    Safari -- Firefox CTRL-ENTER equivalent?

I've always loved doing CTRL-ENTER in the location bar on Firefox (actually, IE has that feature too, if memory serves), which instantly adds the ".com", and the "http://www." to the address you type...e.g. google. In Safari, if you use the APPLE-RETURN key (my apologies, I don't know what...

    Full screen

This is a great thread. I sympathize with (was it Super Typhoon?) the mini mac user who was trying to maximize his window. I, too, was wondering what the deal was with the green button. After a few weeks with my iMac, I'm getting used to not having maximized windows. I generally drag...

    Remote Desktop

Denise...I don't know the answer to this, but if you find out how to do it, will you please post back here? I'd be curious to know about this. What are you using to connect? There's a program I've used on Linux called rdesktop which I've used to connect to Win2000 servers, and XP Pro, both...

How to sort it right with du -h | sort ????

How about making it into a CSV file that can be opened via a spreadsheet, and then formatted from there? It may still not be what you're looking for, but here's an example: du -d1 Library/ | sort -n | awk '{printf "\"%-s\",\"%d\"\n", $2, $1}' > sizes.csv Now cat the CSV file, which has...
