eMac for video work - any thoughts??

You might want to reconsider the eMac. They have reliability problems. Consider this from macfixit.com: UPDATE: Apple Reseller comments The owner of a fairly large Apple authorized reseller, who wishes to remain anonymous, provided MacFixIt with a dismal report on the serious display problem...

    Best browser for Mac!

While I agree that it has layout issues, I find that OmniWeb is not at all slow in comparison to IE. I use OW all the time, and when I occasionally have to step back to IE (usually to use some ecommerce site that OW can't grok) I find IE to be significantly slower and more cumbersome. (Using...

Anyone have a dual processor 1 GHz machine?

    > I have read that the dual processors help you in certain situations where the software is programmed and set up to use the dual processors. Software which falls into this category includes Mac OS X itself, so the effect of dual processors is noticeable much more of the time than one might...

    iTunes 3.0.1 is out

Anyone know what's new/changed/fixed in it? This info is not immediately apparent, and I missed my chance to see the file log during installation.

    10.2.1 is in release?

Yes the update server is down from time to time, but it is *always* offline for a time just before an update is released. I suspect we may see 10.2.1 today or tomorrow.

    install osx jaguar FAILS!

You wouldn't happen to have any Norton software installed, would you? That stuff can be...let's say... slightly incompatible with 10.2 at the moment. Uninstall it. The 10.2 installer seems to have trouble with any 3rd-party software that alters the default core OS at all, including...

    Video Card

Personally, I would avoid flashing PC cards. It's possible to do it, but IMHO hardly worth it. As btoneill suggests, get a Mac edition 8500, or wait a bit and get the new 9000 Pro. I think either should be less than $200.

    CDR Burner not recognized !!!!!

Make sure your SCSI adapter driver is 10.2 compatible. Not all 10.1.x drivers are, unfortunately.

Audio buzz through Griffin iMic problem...

I record audio with an iMic, both from a Sony cassette deck and from an Onkyo receiver. No buzzing heard here. (Aside from input being somewhat overly bright and loud, I have no criticisms of the iMic, especially for the price.)

    SCSI Cards in 10.2?

Adaptec PowerDomain 2930U cards can do 20MB/sec. This is twice the speed of the Orangemicro card, but slower than the ATA66 bus in your Mac, so, no, I wouldn't consider it for use with disks. If you want to boot from SCSI disks, get a faster Adaptec PowerDomain card, like the 29160N, or an...

    SCSI Cards in 10.2?

I use an Orangemicro Grappler 906F with the latest driver and firmware under 10.2 with no problems. Deep sleep works fine. I use it with an external CD-R, and it is fine for that. This card would be too slow for use with hard disks, however.

    Printer Advice...

Get a laser printer. Sure, they cost more, but inkjets just suck. Really. I normally wouldn't make such a blanket generalization like that, but I've been burned too many times. Don't be tempted by the low prices: You really get what you pay for with printers.

    Virtual PC on osX

I run Win98 in VPC on my Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver, and it runs OK. Too slow for games, though. I imagine it would be quite sluggish on your 400Mhz box.

    Omniweb application icon misbehaves

This will not happen if you replace the icon from the command line. Yes, this isn't as friendly as the usual Mac way, but it works. Open your Terminal, cd to /Applications/OmniWeb.app/Contents/Resources, and rename the file OmniWeb.icns. Copy in your replacement, and you're done. With...
