when i try to input a non-ascii character (eg. 'ä') at the bash prompt in an xterm it doesn't show up. is there any way to get an Xterm or Terminal window to accept non-unicode chars? is it something to do with the system language settings?

i solved my problem by putting the PATH=... in the ~/.bashrc file. :D

how do i set/change the PATH environment variable? i have tried editing /etc/profile but nothing changes. i can get it to work by typing PATH="mypath" at a bash prompt in X11, but when i start a new xterm the PATH has reverted to the original.
