Will the drive mount existing data disks, or any kind of disks? Is it just blank disks that have this problem? I'd suggest getting rid of toast, especially since it's unregistered and thus probably crippled in some way. You don't need any third-party software to burn data disks, Disk Utility...

Yeah, but he seems to update other parts of his site when they need it, reckon it's low-risk, worth a try so long as you have backup somewhere. From what he says there it looks like the worst that will happen is that the system will miss the instruction and use the main partition.

Yes you can use a custom partition for swap, on the main or another drive. I've never done it but I saw a decent how-to along with lots of other good info. on Mike Bombich's site: http://www.bombich.com/mactips/swap.html He makes Carbon Copy Cloner.

Seeing as you did actually save them to disk, the files are most likely actually there. The system keeps a catalog with the positions of all the files on the disk, and if this gets corrupted you can 'lose' some. I don't know of anything free that can do this kind of recovery, and there seems to...
