    mail.app won't send!

Ok, this is a bizarre one! Mail refuses to send - claiming that it timed out trying to contact the server on port 25. The thing is, is that I manage my own mail server, and it is functioning normally. I can even send mail and mail.app will recieve it, but it won't send outgoing. Both my pop...

    Iphoto auto launches...

... whenever I insert my compact flash card (via PCMCIA slot.). However, I hate iphoto, and don't want it. Is there a way to quit this behaviour? Also, the computer always boots to the login screen, even though I have that option turned off in the security preferences. Is there a way to...

    SPAM Explosion in mail.app

The 'Reset' in the Spam filter appears to have done something. It actually caught some spam on the last mail check. Will see how it fares over a day or so.

Powerbook 15" wrist support area broken!

The sticks is in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. I had to return this unit once allready (screen failed after two days), and it was a terrible pain. They DON't pay for shipping - they told me to 'bring it in' to a shop in Vancouver - just over 1100 miles away! Apple product support sucks if you...

Powerbook 15" wrist support area broken!

I was picking up my powerbook yesterday one handed. I heard a snap and the area under my right wrist (above the CD) is now flexing about a third of a millimeter. It does not appear to affect the computer performance, but the machine is still under warranty. Problem is, I live in the sticks...

    SPAM Explosion in mail.app

I give up. This program used to work very well at filtering mail, but now every little bit of spam appears to get through. I continually mark about a thousand a week as 'spam', but they all still get through. I know we all have different situations regarding our relative 'status' on the...

Quicktime movie won't play on WinXP

Imported it back into iMovie 04, and re-exported it, and it is now fine. Wierd. Thanks folks for all your suggestions!!

Quicktime movie won't play on WinXP

Well, I have since upgraded iLife to the 04 version, and I re-exported the file, and it works now! Thanks so much to the group for all your input on this. Still don't know what happened with the old one, but the new one is full DV quality, and plays in QT on both platforms!! CHeers

Quicktime movie won't play on WinXP

I agree it SHOULD work - but it doesn't. I have since upgraded to iLife 04 - should I re-export the file do you think?

Quicktime movie won't play on WinXP

Hmm - not sure, I did it about a month ago. I had it set to export as Quicktime, with full DV settings, I believe. How do I tell what codec each version of quicktime has?

Where is the vaunted OSX stability?

Running a powerbook 15" G4 1GHz, OS 10.3.2, 768M RAM. Have the problem with other apps running, or even with only the finder active. Machine originally came with Jaguar, and I upgraded to Panther in November. Also included with the 'upgrade' was my mail filter which used to catch just...

Where is the vaunted OSX stability?

Nope - I am simply accessing a folder on the WinXP hard drive. Not running any MS programs on the Mac at the time. Even if I were - the supposed 'multi threaded', 'protected memory', 'pre-emptive multi tasking' features of MacOSX are supposed to enable one app to crash, and be recovered...

Good for you mate! Don't see where that is relevant to this discussion - but hey!, congratulations!

Where is the vaunted OSX stability?

I keep reading about how OSX 'never crashes'. May need a logout etc. to fix problems. Bunk. I crash this machine multiple times a week. I can reproduce a crash reliably. If I login to my Windows XP machine from OSX (ie I open a folder on the windows box), initiate a file copy, then do...

Quicktime movie won't play on WinXP

Maybe not, but how can I tell? I have the 'latest' quicktime on both machines.

Quicktime movie won't play on WinXP

I created a .mov file on my mac using quicktime export from imovie. It plays fine on the mac. Transferred it to my PC (winXP home), and it won't play there. Neither Windows Media Player, nor the quicktime Windows client can open it - both claiming it is not a file that quicktime supports...

    Just what is Apple Script?

...an extreemely powerfull scripting addition to the MacOS. It has been around for several OS generations (Started in OS 7). With it you can automate virtually all Finder tasks, and control many applications. Depending on the level of Applescript support within an app, you can do most of the...

    Safari plug ins???

Trying to use MSN to game online. When I go to the chess forum/game room, it complains that: The page contains MIME content of 'application/x-oleobject', and Safari doesn't have a plug in for it. IS there such a plug in for Safari?? I downloaded and installed WMP 9 for OSX, hoping it would...

Quicktime movie won't play on WinXP

Hmmm- is there a way to translate a .mov file into an mpeg/avi - on the mac platform? (Since it won't play on Windoze, it is best to stick to the mac for manipulation) Something like Graphic converter for movies.
