    Installing new hard drive (newbie)

Hardware wise, you don't have to do anything other than plug it in. Software wise, it'll probably need to be formatted. You do this by running Disk Utility from the Utilities folder. Select the new hard drive in the left column. Choose the Erase tab in the right column and set Mac OS Extended as...

    Cover Art

Look at it this way; at 50K for each cover, it will take 80 covers before you have to give up one 4MB song. I don't think that's significant. My library is 2250 songs. If I put an album cover on each, I could only fit 2221 songs in the same space.

    Some changes for 10.3

Yes, I have 640MB in my simple iBook. It would take a long time to write 640MB to disk!

    Some changes for 10.3

Veljo is not talking about a RAM disk. Some PCs can copy the contents of RAM to special place on the hard drive before they shut down. Then when they reboot, the use that to restore RAM to exactly the way it was before shutdown. All apps and docs open as before, same windows, as if it was never...

    Redoing

On the Mac OS installer CD into the CD-ROM drive and reboot. Hold the C key down until you see the happy Mac. At that point, the computer has seen your C key down and will boot from the CD. Once booted, look in the Utilities folder for the application called Drive Setup. Double click on it...

    IBook vs 12 inch Powerbook

This is an easy question. If you want to use iDVD, you need a superdrive--thus the Powerbook. iDVD won't run on any current iBook. Chris

    Hidden servers ?

The Mac remembers the names or servers it has connected to in the past. So it makes sense that your older machine shows more servers.

Post "how to upgrade old ipod to 2.0"-info here please!

We can only guess that it's marketing. Perhaps there is a hardware reason which we are not aware of. I have a Canon S100 digital camera. It can't capture short video clips like the newer Canon Digital Elph can. Canon doesn't offer me a firmware upgrade. Should I be upset? Michaelsanford: I...

    128 AAC vs 128 MP3

Even if you can't get the iTunes music store yet, you can still rip some of your own CDs to AAC (aka .m4a for MPEG 4 Audio) and listen to them. For info on AAC, try http://www.apple.com/mpeg4/aac/

    new iPod cases etc.

I've always just kept my iPod in a microfiber sunglass bag. It keeps the scratches and fingerprints off very well.

    Locking my iBook

Set the screensave to activate in a hot corner. Then throw the cursor into the corner before you close the lid.

    128 AAC vs 128 MP3

The bit rate is absolutely a measure of size! In this case, it means your file will require 128K bits for each second of music. Since any particular song's length is constant, a 128Kbps encoding will be the same size regardless of the codec. For example, a song that is 300 seconds long will...

    laserwriterIINT vs OsX

I was in the same situation. Your best bet is to buy a Laserwriter IIg motherboard. Try eBay. You can probably find one for under $50. For that, you'll get Postscript level 2, better speed, more RAM, and built-in ethernet. You can sell the DaynaPrint to cover the cost of the motherboard.

    Java support

John, Would that be an iPlanet netlet? My company uses that as a VPN for home access to the company network. Even though it is Java, it absolutely will not run in OS X. But it runs fine in OS 9 using IE. Chris

    Selectively editing Safari history

Sure, just delete the one you don't want anymore. Choose "Show All Bookmarks" from the Bookmarks menu. Then click on History in the left column. Delete the ones your don't want from the right column. The history entries are really just bookmarks.

When will the iTunes encoding bug get fixed?

We're all ears. Please explain the gaps you've got. I always thought songs were supposed to be separated by gaps. Even on LPs, there were always small gaps between songs. You had to have them to put the needle down in the right spot.

    Maximize Windows

Michi, Welcome to the Mac. Things are different here. We value screen real estate. Applications generally don't attempt to "take over" your entire screen. When you click the green button, the application is supposed to make the window large enough to show the contents of the window, but no...
