    WWDC News Reports Here!

Question about quick user switching, can anyone tell if you can: A - turn off the 3d cube thing B - have the same user logged in multiple times I'm thinking this could be used for virtual desktops assuming you can do A and B (esp B).

A site dedicated to X vs XP

OK, forgetting that the scoring is beyond lame (to their credit, they admit it) and the assigning of winners to the various categories subjective to say the least, my big question is WHY? From the comments on the site, I assume that the person who runs the site is a Mac person. Why the need...

Apple Store shows a G5 ad

OK, lets see. It says "Choose your PowerMac G4" but then all the processor choices are "G5", BUT you can only order G4's from the configs below. So we're to assume that someone from Apple just accidentally changed that one line that states the G5 speeds and updated the website? Someones doing...

    A good idea...

Not sure what you mean. Do you mean that it wasn't until XP that M$ shipped wireless drivers with the OS? I first used wireless on the original 2Mb 802.11 standard (Proxim equipment) on nt4. I know earlier "non-standard" versions were available way before then. Well it the range would be...

It uses standard 802.11b, which is exactly what airport is. Windows has been able to do wireless long before Apple came along with airport. I don't want to degrade this into another Apple vs Microsoft flame fest, but please at least read the information on the product before commenting.

And cost $3000 ;) Plus the thing already has handwriting recognition (and if it's as good as on the tablets, it's not that bad at all) and wifi, what other types of things would the hardware company come up with? There is that little company called IBM. Maybe not with PC's, but for sure...

    A good idea...

Just a point of clarification, the display itself uses CE. You need XP Pro running on the host computer (because you need terminal services or whatever they're calling the stripped down version). btw, you can add a touch sensitive film to most laptops if you really want the touch screen...

    A good idea...

Basically what you're getting with XPPro is a stripped down version of terminal services and that is what allows the thing to work (much better than a "dumb" solution like vnc over the limited bandwidth of wifi). Anyone who's seriously considering spending $1000 for these things, might not...

    WWDC Keynote Broadcast?

30-45 min, in LA, hmm, then it must only be about 5 miles away from you then ;) :D

    What does Hypertransport get me?

PC's already have hypertransport via the nForce chipset from nVidia (and maybe SIS also, can't remember now). Also, HT could help IO bandwidth considerably, esp compared to the current Apple mobos, and even more so in a multi-tasking environment (think files tranferred over ethernet to your...

    What does Hypertransport get me?

Just out of curiosity, in a 2 hd config on a powermac (which is what I assume you're referring to here), do both hd's have their own ide channel, or are they sharing one? If they're sharing one, then theres a huge part of you're bottleneck right there. IDE is a dumb bus and masters/slaves...

More PPC970 rumourmongering over on /.

There is currently a discussion on the rumoured 970 based PowerMacs and PowerBooks(!) over on slashdot right now (www.slashdot.org). Its an interesting read (basically a discussion on MacWhispers.com) and if the discussion here is getting a bit too "high brow", a mosey on over to /. is always a...

    do you sleep?

Hmmm, you seem to be knowledgable in the ways of sleep. A question. As stated before, if I get "too much" sleep, I feel like crap. So how does one try to get oneself back into a "good" pattern. Any more sleep than what I currently get yields negative results. Do you just suffer through this...

    do you sleep?

The only problem is that wrt naps, it doesn't matter if I sleep for 15 minutes or 4 hours, I still feel like crap (just like Habilis). Now that makes more sense for night sleeping, as I've felt the effects of oversleep many times before, and though mentally tougher to overcome, undersleeping is...

BILL & HP copy APPLE Design

Actually in this case "bad" is a reference to business tactics and not to represent a company being poorly run (before anyone chimes in, I'm neither agreeing or disagreeing, just clarifying). Note that your points about Apple can exactly be mapped onto Microsoft (assuming a somewhat liberal...

    do you sleep?

I used to get about 4-6 hours, but then my son was born (also have a daughter) and I had even less time to get stuff done. For a long time (about 2 years) it was 2-4 hours, but I find that I have a harder time staying awake now, so I'm settling back to 4-5 hours. If I get more than 5-6...

They even took down the Apple Store to announce it. The line forms at the left ;)

    WinXP and OS X

Remember that the time it takes to boot is very dependant on the hardware you have installed. Not the speed, just the number and type. Part of the time is taken up by doing checks on the various hardware bits. File systems are checked (so the more you have, the longer it takes), networks are...

    interesting question about streaming...

I don't know about the particulars for the server, but worse case scenerio you could always drive the web interface programatically. Shouldn't be a problem if you are already willing to use sockets.

    Panther vs. Longhorn: The Rematch!

FYI, NT is completely different than OS/2. NT is written on top of a microkernel that allows you to have different OS api's. Two were developed in the beginning, the OS/2 32bit API and the Win32 api. Now there is one way that you can think of it as "just OS/2", it was originally intended to...
