that is a good mantra(tm). as a rule, never move any of apples own applications from their initial position. i goofed gloriously and completely 4 years ago by moving everything to different sub folders (multimedia etc). the printer stoped working and updating was a nightmare. changed it back...

bringing dashboard out is instant on my powerbook as long as i have free memory (my guess is that the system saves that action in the memory as long as it can to keep it smooth). i have not restarted my computer since 10.4.1 came so i dont know how long it takes the first time around.

how about the iPhoto? i have not been able to use iphoto for over a month because of the auto-enhance-photos-bug. agree on the ripple effect. on my girlfriends ibook dashboard is instant while i have to suffer a lagging water effect. anybody with a G5? is it always instant there?

have you tried to connect it via composite (the yellow)? your problem reminds me of when i tried to connect my fathers powerbook directly to a television without a ntsc to pal converter (that came with the powerbook i later discovered).

what happens if you unplug the shuffle, quit itunes, and then connect the shuffle again? Does itunes start automatically? do you have the latest version of iTunes? there should be nothing else that need to be installed. good luck!

what troubles me is that you say the processor work at 100%. that does not seem healthy. the only time my processor (see signature) work at 100% is when soething is wrong (like Finder got trapped in a bad cycle or something). what is it that you do to the poor thing? :)
