    The request for password simply indicates an authentication failure, which could have any number of causes. Frankly, Mail is crap in this respect and I still use Claris Emailer whenever possible!

    You could certainly try dragging the system folder across but I don't think it will boot up properly. Do you have an earlier system installer disc? Maybe Panther?

    That's really "belt and braces" ;) I've found it sufficient just to "repair permissions" before and after, without resorting to the installation DVD - although I take your point, I've never had a problem doing it this way. Martin
