Finish Wearing Off on Screen Release

Ahh..... my PowerBook is only 1 month old and, through routine use, already the silver finish on the screen release button seems to be going. Take a look at this pic. Anyone else notice this on their PowerBook(s)? Not a huge issue, but come on Apple. I just spent $2,500 on a computer and a...

How to stop the Trash icon jumping around?

Hold command (apple key) while you are dragging. This will prevent dock items from moving to accommodate your file.

    Bought 2 laptop's with 2 different sounds!

The difference is likely because of the different hard drives. I have the 60 gig Toshiba drive on my new 15" PowerBook and it's so quiet that I sometimes have trouble determining whether or not the system is on. One of my friends at school has a much louder PowerBook which he bought last year...

Can i listen to radio on an ipod?

The iPod does not have a radio tuner, so the answer is no. You may be able to, however, with a third party accessory. I think I recall seeing something from either Griffin or Belkin that snaps onto the ipod and adds a radio tuner.

    Removing Software

Just to clarify, you should normally just drag a program from your Applications folder to the trash to remove it from your system (similar to an uninstall in windows.) Doing this, however, will leave whatever preference files that were associated with that app intact. These preference files...

    wireless network

Yes, you will need both a card and a base station, as well as additional cards for however many wireless devices you want to connect. You can buy a base station from any brand you like, but you can only use Airport Wireless Cards in your Macs. I strongly recommend D-Link's base stations...

    Where do you buy memory?

Yeah, Apple is notorious for ripping off customers with RAM. Crucial is the most popular memory supplier for PC and Macs. They make their own RAM and it's high-quality, although I'm not sure you're going to find a better deal than 99$ for 512 there. That's a pretty good price. Although...

    wireless network

The base station is a router. It connects to your DSL or Cable modem and broadcasts the signal to your computer's wireless card (the airport card.) The base station is not a modem, but rather it connects to your modem to broadcast its signal wirelessly. Think of the base station as a radio tower...

    wireless network

Apple's airport technology is standard 802.11. In English, that means you can use any 802.11b/g wireless router (a majority of them), and your Macintosh as well as your PC will recognize it. If Airport is too expensive, check out offerings from D-Link and Linksys. My personal router is a D-Link...

    digital pics with isight

Grab Photos is exactly what you want. It'll take a still picture with iSight and save it as a jpeg.

Does the Powerbook have 2 mouse buttons or one?

It only has one button. To gain the functionality of two, you could download SideTrack, which adds horizontal and vertical scrolling and optional right clicking to the touchpad.

    12" or 15"? iBook G4 or Powerbook G4?

15" has a backlit keyboard, more ports (firewire 800 and 400, dvi and s-video) , a PC card slot, and a higher screen resolution (1280x854 instead of 1024x768.) It's also available with a faster processor (1.5 instead of 1.33.) Personally, I think sacrificing a little portability for a larger...

    Newbie to powerbook 12"

12" Models do not come with a backlit keyboard, nor can one be installed. If you had this keyboard, you'd have illustrations on your F8, F9, and F10 keys similar to the ones in the picture below. Sorry for the bad quality... the camera on my phone is really shot.

    When taking a screenshot...

I find that the 2nd applescript mentioned works really well for converting screen shots quickly from PDF format, which can be tedious to view on Windows machines. Attached is my modification if that script, which replaces the ".pct" option with ".png," which I find more useful, and changes...

    PALM vs PPC

I have a fairly new HP iPaq Pocket PC and I wish I'd gotten a Palm. Windows Pocket 2003 is really buggy.... hardly anything works right, and pocket IE renders sites really crappily and the letter recognition is unimpressive. Also there's more software for Palm OS and PPC isn't Mac-friendly...

    iMac G5

Take a closer look at http://www.apple.com/imac/software.html ... the keyboard and mouse seem pretty far below where the screen starts. Where did the computer go? Duh.. into the giant banner below the screen. :p

Need help deciding what to do please help

I have a new 15" Aluminum PowerBook and I love it. Not too small, not too big, and it's plenty fast for my needs. I'd say get the PowerBook instead of a G5, especially since you can take it to your classes with you. Also, this thread should probably be in The Cafe.

    iMac G5

It's interesting that Apple seems so intent on comparing the iMac G5 to the iPod, definitely in hopes to convert PC users with iPods. It'll be interesting whether or not this marketing technique pays off.
