Problem Service - How to remove?

I have been tweaking my OS X box over the last 2 weeks since I started using it full time and have been experimenting with various apps, etc. My SERVICES menu has become rather crowded with some things I don't really want any more. On top of that - there is some service that is causing a problem...

    Creating fonts in OSX

For years and years I have always used Macromedia's Fontographer (no longer available). Fontographer is/was the defacto standard for creating fonts of many types and for many platforms. This app has saved my butt more times than I can mention. Its the only app that would reliably convert fonts...

    Printcenter screwed up?

This started happening to me the other day at work. I have searched all the forums and boards I can think of and it appears to be a widespread problem. Unfortunately I found no solutions. Here are some things I tried that did not work: * reinstall Print Center * delete all printers and...

Internet Explorer will not down load anything

One thing you might look at - have you recently tried the app SpeedDownload? This app takes over the d/l from Explorer (and others) and I have yet been able to find out how to get Explorer to regain the ability. In the mean time what I have found that is easier than right clicking on the links...

    Postfix woes

I am not sure I know the cause of your problems with Postfix as I am a Postfix newbie myself. What I can tell you is that the free http://www.webmin.com package has a nice module that provides a GUI interface for using/configuring Postfix. Works great!

Extreme Sys mods - how to backup?

One question though - lets say I wanted to mirror a mod system from one machine to another. I have been having pretty good success using Tri-Backup to synch apps, etc. and they retain their permission, ownership, etc. What I worry about though is lets say I synch the /var dir in one machine to...

Extreme Sys mods - how to backup?

DUDE! That was a most excellent description of what's going on!!! I do have a good grasp of the nix file structure, etc. and I even watch the make install logs, etc. The problem is - the stuff is just flying all over the place. I keep telling myself I am going to document what gets installed...

BIND in OSX 10.1 / Darwin

I have been thinking about setting up BIND for use on my internal LAN and your comments make the compile sound easy (I too have had trouble in the past with the compile). I am wondering though why I would want to install BIND? I think it would be useful for my setup - I have 5 Macs and one PC on...

shoutcast server 1.8.3 how to make it work

Do you have a stream of music running to the server? I am not sure it will be liste don the Shoutcast page as active until you actually have a stream running? Also - there is a setting in the config to turn off/on the public listing of the server on the Shoutcast page - it is ON by default so...

    sendmail with no domain name

You might want to look at Postfix also. I monkeyed with Sendmail for a week, before I gave up and installed Postfix. Easy install and it can be admin' through the WebMin interface. Strangely enough after I got postfix running on my main server box, I also discovered a trick to get sendmail...

Extreme Sys mods - how to backup?

While this may not be a strictly UNIX question - I think you guys might know the answers better than others. I have spent quite a bit of time learning UNIX and the OS X System and have been modifying my basic OS X 10.1.2 install pretty heavily. Compiling my own software and installing it...

    Help with NetJuke?

Hmmmm.....thats a new one I have not heard of yet. I have been using NetJuke for a while now and never had any problems with installing it. I suspect the problem is either in your Apache or your PHP setup. You have properly enabled PHP in your hostconfig file I assume. One thing I might...

Thanks gumse! Thats a great resource AND a lot of those errors that show up are exactly what I see a lot. Now why isn't this info more readily available - say SHIPPING WITH THE DEVELOPER TOOLS CD or something.

    newbie: compiling c code

I wish there was some down to earth info on compiling items in OS X - but there isn't. I have the developers cd installed and I get around pretty good in UNIX, but I know nothing about programming. I d/l these supposed "OS X" compatible sources and try to compile them following published...
