Why does my OSX break after updates

I've got an old B&W G3 with 10.3..even after a clean install, if I do all the necessary updates for all installed software and security updates (itunes, quicktime..etc) it will say something about not all updates could be installed or downloaded and then will tell me to reboot. I click ok and...

    Smoothwall router / firewall

LOL well I'll be honest and say I'm a PC guy primarily. My main, backup and laptop PC's are all I really need for my daily tasks. The 486 DX2-66 computer with 80mb RAM is not good enough due to having only ISA slots and 10mbit cards. I get about 3.5meg down instead of roughly 6meg down. My...

    Smoothwall router / firewall

Is there anything like smoothwall (linux based router/firewall) for OSX? I want to get rid of my buggy linksys and I've looked at the dlinks and they are not right for me. I tried monowall on a really old 486 PC and it works but its kinda slow. I have a B&W G3 with 512mb RAM and would like to...

PC user trying to upgrade friends Mac...

Thanks guys for the prompt reply. I'm going to go ahead and put the computer to the latest firmware. I'm only running the one drive (SCSI) and no ATA drives in the machine. There is about 1/2 the drive left for free space. Also I did find out as someone else said, the SCSI card seems to be an...

PC user trying to upgrade friends Mac...

And I'm about to lose it but before I blame the OS and hardware, maybe there is somthing I'm missing - as to the problem of freezing and lockups during local LAN access or when doing a few things at once (surfing while running an installer while listening to music of the local drive..etc. I dont...

    Intel Inside, Apple Outside

...and how much money they saved by actually having a good selection of 'freeware' as opposed to shareware or how much money they saved by not having to drive 30 miles to get to an apple store or the one store that carries the software they need or how much they saved by being able to get...

    Computer for my mother...

I got that G3 from work for $70 in that configuration. I'll just have to buy an OS now to be legal so I assume thats like $120 or so..

    Computer for my mother...

Actually I ended up putting 10.3 on there as a test and I think its a bit more zippy. Maybe I can buy 10.3 or 10.4 for that machine. I dont want her having a 'copy' of OSX. In any case the machine is pretty decent. I think the SCSI subsystem is helping because the only slow down really is...

    Computer for my mother...

Well the PC I was going to give her was a PIII 550 with 512mb RAM, 40gig IDE drive, burner..etc. I was going to put XP home on there. I dont have cash lying around so its either the G3 or the PIII 550 and an OEM XP Home. Still, I'm leaning more towards the G3. I really dont think she'll be...

    Computer for my mother...

She knows NOTHING so I'll be teaching her the basics. I'm a PC guy but I know she will have less probs on a Mac being new to everything because less chance of her getting spyware or ending up on the wrong site somehow and being infected with something (its fine for me as a tech guy because I...

    Intel Inside, Apple Outside

For $339, I can get a 3.4Ghz P4 with HT and 2mb cache. For $350 I can get a 3800+ AMD socket 939. In my opinion, there is no contest and its a no brainer. The P4 3.4 wins hands down and I will explain why.... -stable and mature chipsets released by intel -much smoother multitasking due to...

    Viruses On Os X

Well its not that its neutral to .exe files. It just cannot run executable files that are from the x86 platform. Its like if I put a photoshop CD in my PC and try to install it. It wont work. Same thing the other way. Although the end result is that youre safe from PC execatable viruses.

    Intel Inside, Apple Outside

Its true, but I brought it up because I think apple has made the right choice by going intel. I believe its a more stable and mature platform.

    Intel Inside, Apple Outside

Doesnt matter. My friend was bragging about his machine. His box is one year newer than my box and his processor cost considerably more than my two xeons. My board cost marginally more than his. Its dollar for dollar. Comparing an opteron setup that costs 2x the price is kind of stupid. All...

    Intel Inside, Apple Outside

having owned only older macs (Quadra 950 and a B&W G3) but having built my own PC's since the days of 386, I can offer my experiences... AMD has usually done well on paper. Lots of speed in benchmarks and that kind of thing but I find in actual real world usage, Intel systems tend to be more...

    OSX vs. Windows

I think the problem is that a lot of people - at least the ones I know in PC land like the idea of towers because of their upgradability in terms of adding more drives as well as having better cooling solutions. Nobody wants to be boxed in. Heck I'd guarantee that if apple released a single...

    OSX vs. Windows

Actually I own one of those Asus laptops. I picked it up a year ago. Its a cenrino 1.6, has 768mb ram at the moment and a 5400rpm 60gig drive, firewire, 3 usb 2.0, built in card reader, 1x pcmcia, combo drive, intel 10/100 ethernet and 802.11g. Its a 12.1" laptop and weighs 3.4lbs :)...

    OSX vs. Windows

Well I think what he was saying is that for someone who is willing to build or have built a custom box and doesnt need the tech support, they can get a much more powerful box for the $$. If I configured a dualcore 2.3 with 2gig RAM, 7800GT, 250gig drive, DVD burner..etc it would cost $3800...

    OSX vs. Windows

Seriously, for anyone having any major issues with their platform being unstable, its either user error or crappy/failing hardware. Thats it. Our macs are G4 and G5's running print and sound apps and our higher end PCs are video editing and application development stations. We also have...
