    MacBook Pro w/ Netgear Router

Explain "Can't get it to work with my Mac". What happens? Does it connect but fail to acquire an address? Does it not connect at all? Do you know how to go into the router configuration? Let us know what the settings under the wireless section are.

    BitTorrent

BitTorrent has plenty of legitimate uses. My vote is that if it's a general BT question we should be able to help/discuss. If they come right out and say "I need to get BT to work so I can get some m4d w4r3z" no discussion is needed. I guess you never know what someone is really going to use...

New to Mac, Slow, slow, slow downloads

So... What software are you using to download stuff? Are you using Safari, Firefox, an FTP application, etc? If you are using Safari maybe you should try something else, like Firefox to see if it runs any faster. Also, try running a speed test: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest and see...

finder stuck in loop due to too many jpgs on desktop

You could boot into single user mode: command + s at startup. This should put you at a command line so you can take care of your problems. Oh yea, you probably need to mount the hard disk to be read/write: /sbin/mount -wu / BE CAREFUL! :-D

MacBook & MacBook Pro Heat and battery drain

I know this is a semi silly question but you made sure that it succesfully turned off right? Screen was off, fans were off, etc? I've had my laptop come out of sleep while in my bag, it gets really hot when it's inside an insulator. If your's was off when you put it in your bag... and off when...

    Programmer for hire?

It's probably better that way. I just needed some modivation for learning Obj-C + Cocoa... I am having a hard time coming up with a neat idea.

    *nix fileserver advice needed

I've never used Netatalk but it sounds like a good idea to me. To change permissions you need to use chmod and chown. chmod changes permissions and chown changes ownership. There are three permission... groups, owner, group, and other. Under that there are three access options for each...

    Programmer for hire?

Are you still looking for help? I'm done with school now so I have some more free time. I'm not very proficient at Cocoa but I tend to pick up things fairly quickly. This App sounds pretty simple as well. I'd be willing to do it for free if no one has picked it up yet.

    *nix fileserver advice needed

Did you make sure that the unix user you created has write permission to that directory? Also, even though you have specified writable = yes, there is another property called read only, try setting that to no. Per your swat issue, are you using IP Tables or any sort of firewall? That's...

    *nix fileserver advice needed

My understanding was that Linux's support of HFS+ was lousy at best (could be wrong), it would probably be better to just stick to a file system that Linux knows well. I saw somewhere a suggestion to use plain old HFS instead. I've found samba to be very suitable for my needs. Although I've...

Do Mac users support GW Bush?

I love the fact that this is an international board. You guys have some really interesting views and I enjoy reading them. It almost makes me think I belong somewhere else. I could say so much more, but that is all.

    idont.com

Hey now. I searched, found no discussions about it, so I decided maybe it would be nice to have one. Besides, according to the site it was launched 10 days ago. I guess thats _technically_ last month... but meh.

    idont.com

I searched, didn't find anything. Please don't hurt me. I stumbled across this website today, it's pretty interesting. At first it seems like a site created by a random third party simply hating on the iPod, and the people that have them. Then I hit the "The Alternative" page and realized it's...

FINE! Someone mentioned wanting this earlier, haven't seen it linked yet. "Fast OS Switching"

Windows Virtualization (WinXP under Mac OS X) Beta Released

Interesting, is this just a MacBook issue? People I know with refurbished PowerBooks haven't had any problems. If I were to sell my G5 and my Acer, I would _have_ to get something with a real video card. The point would be, as I sit now, I can't play games. There are too few for Mac and my PC...

Apple File Sharing on a local network

What do you mean they don't show up? The aren't there when you open the window or when you type in their name it fails to connect? We're talking about Finder > Go > Connect to Server right? The connect to server dialog requires the protocol to be used. The protocol you want is Apple File...

Windows Virtualization (WinXP under Mac OS X) Beta Released

Arg! Damn computers. I am seriously considering losing both the PowerMac and the Acer to get a MBP. Both computers are fine really, but I only really use my laptop when I need windows, or I'm going somewhere. Ever since I got done with school I have found a lot less reasons to take my computer...

    Virus? December 31st, 1969

Hmm. Doesn't a dead battery only affect the clock if the computer has been unplugged? I seem to remember computers keeping time as long as they didn't lose wall power. Could be wrong though :-P

    Widgets

Apple has a tutorial on using the XMLHTTPRequest object (what you use to do AJAX). You are going to do things with your widget in the same manor because it is, more or less, an HTML page. Now the trick to making it 'Read/Write (do you really want to write?)' a MySQL database is in the PHP...
