    File permissions for Sites folder

Thanks for the info. I can live with it for now. :) 10.4 sounds promising, though I'm sure something will be missing. :)

    File permissions for Sites folder

I have a few PHP-based sites in my Sites folder that I use for testing my websites before uploading them. I would like the contents of the folder to be inaccessible to other user accounts on the computer (to hide the contents of the PHP code) but obviously I need Apache to be able to access the...

Help : Startup gives me unix shell

http://www.macosx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38695&highlight=boot+shell http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/h/348 http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030219105312899 Looks like it could be a missing system file somewhere causing all your headaches too. Maybe OS X is like...

Help : Startup gives me unix shell

Don't know why everyone keeps saying to use fsck over and over, I'm not a Unix expert, but doesn't that just check for disk errors? Once is usually enough. There's a default entry that can be changed that dumps you to a shell instead of the GUI at boot, I don't remember where it is, but...

Looking 4 Shareware to remove Spyware

Try using Activity Monitor and look at "all processes". See if there's anything taking up a lot of memory or CPU. If so, it should be easy to hunt down. Spyware on a Mac is very doubtful and even if it did exist, it couldn't access anything critical and trash your system like on Windows...

Developer Tools 1.5 - Java source completion, yeah

I agree... I feel more like learning Java now that there's code completion. I didn't like the Java-based IDEs so this is a great addition to Xcode. I also agree that collapsable regions would be nice. I didn't know about the commenting shortcut, thanks for the tip.

    Powerbook G4 question

If you have a keyboard, mouse and monitor attached, you should be able to close it. According to the manual anyway, I don't have a keyboard yet.

    Powerbook G4 battery life.

Do a search... there's a thread on how to figure out your battery capacity. You didn't say what size your PowerBook is... but the 15" max capacity is 4600. My new battery reads at 4417, which is fine for me. Also, my new good battery lasts over 3 hours easily with all the extras on...

    password protecting files

http://www.apple.com/server/documentation/ Try looking at User Management. I think you'd have to keep user home folders on the server though, but that might still be the best way to go (and easiest for the user to understand how to use). Especially if you have several eMacs that people can...

"This will open the application for the first time" HUH?

I just noticed that when I opened a powerpoint file. I thought it was Microsoft being stupid, here it turns out it's Apple.

How new is it? Is returning it an option? It may be a hardware problem.

How is your experience with powerbook g4

I have a 1.25Ghz 15". Had the first screen replaced for the white spot problems, the new screen has dark corners and dead pixels. I fought with Apple Store employees three times before they would replace my battery that only lasted 2 hours (on a good day), and then was interrogated again after...

    OpenGL glDrawPixels() help

I put together a tiny test program to try out some OpenGL functions. I'm having trouble with glDrawPixels(). The image displays but it's basically just like looking at static. You cannot distinguish the real image at all. I don't know much about OpenGL, but I can make a cube rotate in 3D. :D...

    Best mail app?

I use Mail with three accounts. It works great. I like setting it up in my startup item so that the icon notifies me of email in the background. Entourage didn't fit my tastes in some areas, but the calendar and ToDo lists are nice. I've never liked Eudora personally. There's also...

    iBlog vs Blogger

I've messed around with Blogger a bit. It's a pretty nice setup, though if you want to have multiple pages their template system and they way they upload files can be a pain to design around. For a simple log I would imagine it would work well. They have some nice templates. That iBlog...

    Xcode 1.5

The code completion for Java sure is a nice addition. And it looks like they fixed the broken SetFile tool. Yeah, a torrent file would be great for any new big downloads.

    Hide determinate progress indicator?

I've noticed a lot of redraw issues with Apple's classes lately. Try doing an explicit [indicatorName drawRect:[indicatorName frame]]; and see if it refreshes it.
