Is spyware an issue in OS X?

I think that spyware would be more difficult to install and hide from the users in Mac OS X. Most software installs are drag & drop and it's usually very easy to monitor what processes are running in the background. I suppose it could be possible to install something into one of the hidden...

    Powerbook Battery Capacity

I just posted this in the other thread where it seemed more relevant, but here you go: * copy / paste * FYI, I just replaced my PowerBook battery under warranty yesterday (it was a huge hassle to get the Apple Store employees to go through with it). My old battery was very random...

What is your Powerbook Battery life number?

FYI, I just replaced my PowerBook battery under warranty yesterday (it was a huge hassle to get the Apple Store employees to go through with it). My old battery was very random: Couple months ago "IOBatteryInfo" = ({"Capacity"=3702,... "IOBatteryInfo" = ({"Capacity"=3659,... July 8...

comcast cable - no access on my mac - help!

That's odd that it would require both the USB and ethernet to be plugged in. Before you said that, I was going to ask if it was locked to the MAC address of your PC. Many cable providers in my area (stupidly) lock the modem to a specific computer so that you have to pay them extra to use more...

Tiger Preview - no new bar?

Has Tiger added any way to move files in the Finder without using drag & drop? My PowerBook is my primary work computer but I really miss having the Cut function for files that Windows (or any Linux GUI) has. It seems like such a simple addition and I mentioned it in the OS X feedback about 20...

Cordless Mouse - How does it affect iBook battery life?

My original batteries (those blue Energizer ones) that came with the mouse lasted almost 2 months with frequent use. I replaced them with Duracell(sp?) and they lasted a month with the same amount of use. I can put up with it though because I hate the wireless USB dongles sticking out of the...

    Going Wireless...hardware question.

If you can't get a wireless NIC for the desktop machine, look into a wireless bridge. Apple's new AirPort Express is supposed to support this or Linksys makes one. I'm sure other's do as well. Funny thing is that they usually cost about as much as a router.

Why won't Apple let me buy a Mac without a Keyboard???

Even in the PC world if you don't want all the extra stuff included you build your own computer from parts. If you go to a generic computer store you get what they sell, good luck customizing it. If you order from Dell or Gateway, etc. online, there's still a lot of stuff you can never leave...

[Cocoa newbie] ld: can't locate file for: -lcrt1.o

I was trying to compile a program tonight that was made in Xcode 1.2 with Xcode 1.1, but I was getting that same linker error. Not any help to you, but I didn't know what it meant. I'm pretty sure that you're not supposed to use Project Builder on Panther... or is it just that you can't use...

How do I clone a CD?

To create a disk image using Disk Utility: Stick the CD/DVD in In Disk Utility: Images >New > Image from *drivename* Then you have a disk image. Toast will also easily make images. Plus it's much better suited for cross-platform CDs if that's a concern.

    Software updates behind a firewall

When you run software update, does your ZoneAlarm pop-up asking you to allow a connection to the Internet from a local IP address? ZoneAlarm is a pain. It does work, especially against spyware or trojan horses as it prevents them from calling home without your knowledge. If you're not...

    SBC And Wireless Router

From my experiences with SBC I can tell you this: it's different in different areas. I absolutely hate setting up new SBC accounts for customers because you have to run their crappy software to setup the user accounts or do it over the phone. SBC uses a couple different DSL modems: they...

allowing NT/2000 machines to see Mac/Library folder on network ???

It would probably be a better idea to setup a user account for the group that you want to be able to edit the pages... rather then editing the root site. Store the web docs in the users Sites folder. If you want those pages to be the default webpages, you'll need to edit the doc root section...

Apple should put Party Shuffle on the iPod

I don't know if it looks at play count or not, but if I play my "5-star songs" list on shuffle and stop it, then start it again, it does have the chance of playing a song I just listened to. So, I don't think that it remembers anything after you stop playing. Personally, I wish the iPod...

    PHP & Blogger Template

Unfortunately, my personal server overheated and my basic ISP hosting (that I get with our DSL package) doesn't include MySQL. I was under the impression that most of the other PHP-based systems require access to a database.

    PHP & Blogger Template

Well, getting Blogger to work with a PHP site is a pain. :D I thought I had a bright idea with this as my template and assign Blogger's output to variables that I can use later: /* blogger vars */ $BlogPageTitle = "<$BlogPageTitle$>"; $BlogMetaData = "<$BlogMetaData$>"...

Adding a Mac to an existing Windows Network... problems...

You could probably write a shell script (or an Applescript?) to automatically mount your network drives for you. I've never done it, but my college Unix computers ran a script at each login to mount the drives, even our Windows machines did that to connect to the Unix servers. Maybe you...

    Connecting to Windows Network Query

That's a "feature" of the latest OS upgrade. I think they did it that way because they couldn't make browsing reliable enough.

    Gui development on OS X

If you were to use Interface Builder and you're working with Cocoa (Objective-C or Java) you can actually drag connections from your interface to class methods graphically. However, I do believe that using C or C++ in Carbon would require setting up IDs for your GUI components instead. My...
