Hard Drive folders

Im running 10.2.8. When I open my hard drive, I see folders such as "etc (Mac OS 9)", "var (Mac OS 9)", cores ("Mac OS 9")...I am a bit of a neat person and was wondering if I could hide these unnecessary folders that just create visual clutter...can they be made invisible?

I've seen these before. OS 9 does not use these folders in any way, AFAIK. And, OS X doesn't use them either. My experience has been: There's no affect one way or another by simply trashing these mentioned folders, as I've haven't even seen any files in them.

Anyone want to give a different opinion, especially a possible source (what causes their creation?)

You could just sweep it under the rug by having Finder open new windows at your home. There's not a lot of reason to see the hd in gui, and you could put the shared folder in your toolbar.
