It sounds like you should try booting into Safe Mode, to see if there's something besides the Finder app that's tripping up your boot process. You may also want to read this article, even though none of the symptoms described exactly apply to you.

If you open the Console and then try to start one of the apps that fails, you might see error or other messages get logged to the Console. If you do, you could post those messages to this thread and give us some more information.
