    Getting a PowerMac 9500 w/450 G4 & 256 MB... Good for OS X?

The iMac for Beige G3 was an unusual good deal I admit. As long as it's a G4 PowerMac, it should be able to run OS X. Have fun! Regards, George Lien

How to defrag our hard drives?

Just like my opinion is not backed up by any scientific evidence, you too deliver no evidence, but an old article from ACKB, fryke. Yes, it's more than what I could deliver. But still, no scientific evidence. It's your word against mine, even though more people on this board might agree...

    Getting a PowerMac 9500 w/450 G4 & 256 MB... Good for OS X?

I bought a used iMac for $270 for trading with a used Beige Powre Macintosh G3 running at 233MHz. I'm sure you can find something for less than $400 that will allow you to run OS X. Good luck! Regards, George Lien

How to defrag our hard drives?

Defreg HD will definitely increase speed. Apple also did not include a defreg program in the classic Mac OS, but it doesn't mean the program isn't important. I'm looking for a defreg tool for UFS, and this is why this thread exist. Regards, George Lien

    Getting a PowerMac 9500 w/450 G4 & 256 MB... Good for OS X?

BlingBling 3k12, fryke has a point. While a PowerMac 9500 with a G4 or G3 upgrade can run OS X, though Apple doesn't support it, the question should really be: Why would you want to do that? You wrote that you've "got it for under $500..." Does that mean you've already got it and...

    Installing Mac OS X

lethe / unlearnthetruth, Good point. The 8GB magical number actually came from the firmware restriction. _____________________________________________________________ fryke, Could you point us to where "Apple said: *Don't* use UFS, use HFS+."...

How to defrag our hard drives?

Yeah, I saw that one coming. The option is there, but we don't have to take it. So the option was there, and I took it. Sue me :P . While what you guys said before may be valid, I still choose UFS, since after all, OS X is based on Unix, right? I just hope I wouldn't have to reinstall my...

How to defrag our hard drives?

You don't think Apple should make the OS X upgrade as simple as the ones in the Classic? I use UFS (Unix File System) because it is an option provided by the MacOS X installation program. Now if UFS is such a bad idea, then why would Apple put it in there? Mind you, this is not a MacOS X...

How to defrag our hard drives?

Charon, I wouldn't do that with OS X, even though I'd do that with OS 9. It's the cheapest way, if you factor out the time and labor required for this task. OS X has yet to be this user-friendly. Regards, George Lien

How to defrag our hard drives?

MacOS X runs much faster under UFS within 8GB of hard disk space in both my PowerBook G4/500 and my Beige G3 with G4/500 upgrade card. Yes, I had to use MacOS X system in my Beige G4/500 to recall the UFS partition on my PowerBook G4 with OS X died on me. But still, the target disk function...

    Installing Mac OS X

ElDiabloConCaca, You've guessed it--WRONG! The partition for MacOS X is UFS. It's much faster than when I had the entire 20GB hard drive in UFS. My bet is still on MacOS X. It has to be the way it organize files. And I'm still looking for a good defrag program...

    Installing Mac OS X

Actually, it might be the way Mac OS X acts. OS 9 doesn't seem to have this kind of issue--at least not on my PowerBook G4/500. Can an expert shine us some light? Regards, George Lien

    Installing Mac OS X

I think you don't have store your application software in the same partition, but I have yet tried it myself. If 10GB is speedy enough for you, then just keep it. My 20GB PowerBook was way too slow, so I had to fix it. Regards, George Lien
