Get and use OpenOffice [free]. There should be no problem. iWork's Numbers and Pages will also open them but are less compatible. If you really must, get Microsoft Office 2008. It looks nice but there seems to be a lot of people who are migrating away from it.

Have a look at Overflow it will likely be a better solution. It runs as an application so you can command tab to it, then make your selection at any time. It also holds links to folders and frequently used documents sorted however you like.

There is a quirk in OSX that items dragged from List View are processed out of order. Try changing the Finder to Column View then selecting and dragging the files.
