If it is just a particular FW cable it is probably the cable or the plugs on the cable. It is possible for the connections inside the plug to get bent and misaligned, it happened on one of my cables. I've also had one out of 2 ports on the back of one of my drives become unreliable.

I think I have done everything correctly to share a HD from one machine wirelessly, but it isn't visible on the other machines. I am running OSX 10.5.2 on 2 x 2.16Ghz iMac 24"s, amongst others. I selected the external HD in the File Sharing Control panel and set it to read/write for everyone.
