Help: Permanent Finder freezing due to hard shutdown.

It's likely that you've created TOO many files on the Desktop, causing the Finder to slow to a crawl when trying to process/display all those icons. Try booting into single-user mode (hold command-s at startup), then use the Terminal to delete the files from your Desktop folder (in your user's...

Ie need for web site thats all they use

Internet Explorer hasn't been available on the Mac operating system for many, many years. You'll need Windows -- either via virtualization (Parallels, VirtualBox, Fusion, etc.) or via BootCamp.

trying to recover old ibook G4; getting kernel panic

Can you force a kernel panic to happen by lifting, twisting, or otherwise slightly, physically manipulating the body or screen of the iBook? Some older iBooks had problems with connectors coming loose, getting tugged on by slight movement/tweaking, or otherwise manifested by physical...

    Activity Monitor Question

Yep, which equates (roughly) to about 4k per pageout -- an extremely negligible amount. If one is seeing pageouts in the gigabyte range, that may be cause for concern (or at least it would be curious), but might be normal depending on what you're doing and what applications you're using. Mac...

    localhost.http syn_sent

That means that a request has been sent to the remote machine, but no RST or ACK/SYN has been received yet. This is typically caused by one of two things: 1) Something with your firewall or the remote host's firewall is preventing communication. 2) The remote host has gone down (i.e., is no...

    Apple Hardware Test Disc

You can typically contact Apple and request a disc, or, better yet, visit your local Apple Store where you may be able to pick up one for free. If those two avenues don't get you any satisfaction, report back and we may be able to help.

    Activity Monitor Question

60.3MB of page-outs seems completely and absolutely normal for a system with 8GB of RAM. That is an extremely low amount of page-outs. I wouldn't worry too much about your page-outs and RAM usage and what-not. Page-outs can and will occur even in some cases where you still have RAM available...

    HD can't be repaired.

I would recommend backing up as much data as possible and replacing the hard drive. It sounds like your hard drive is dying, and the only fix is a replacement hard drive. Like a light bulb: once a light bulb goes out, you can't "fix" it. You have to replace it. No, it doesn't "have to be...

    which is faster?

DeltaMac is right -- you should take into consideration how much space you intend on using on those drives. A bigger drive is always better, especially for a boot drive since your usage will continue to grow and grow over time. As stated earlier in the thread, if you really want to see a...

How to upgrade my external drive

It should, but as always, better safe than sorry. Once you've "migrated" everything over to the new drive, disconnect the old drive and ensure that you can do two things with the new drive (before erasing or re-purposing the old drive): 1) Browse and restore files from the Time Machine backup...

    Nope. At least, not perceptibly.

how to watch movie- got video ts and vts

No, you can just copy it to whatever kind of disc you want. Do you want to do something specific with the burned disc? Mail it? Watch it in a DVD player? Watch it on another computer?

DVR Flash & External Optical Drive [ DVR110]

Is there something specific about firmware 1.41 that the current firmware doesn't do?

DVR Flash & External Optical Drive [ DVR110]

It should work out-of-the-box, by simply plugging it in. No drivers, no configuration, just plug it in and start burning.

    which is faster?

You will notice next to 0 speed difference using either hard drive. Use whichever one you feel you need to.

DVR Flash & External Optical Drive [ DVR110]

The firmware flasher probably won't work over USB. You'll need to mount the drive internally, if possible, or find another computer where you can use the native interface of the DVD drive to perform the firmware flash.
