    net.nostalgia

Right before the WWW took off (for a year or two), gopher took off as the first widely popular hypertext platform on the internet. Gopher was completely tex-based, and was very popular with libraries (the first non-telnet internet-accessible card catalog I ever used was implemented via gopher)...

    multitab mozilla

Haven't tried it yet, but it _should_ work on the mac -- according to the website it's all XUL/XML/RDF/CSS and JavaScript: no binary code needed to do this! (the fact that you can do this sort of thing in mozilla without writing a line of machine-dependent code is why I sake my head ruefully...

    Kensington Webcam

There are no drivres for it in 10.0.x, I'm hoping the fixes being made to USB support in 10.1 will get it working there.

    any1 have the apple font?

Years ago, I had a copy of the Mac Type 1 version, but I don't know what happened to it. Anyway, as Endian says, it's really just a horizontally scaled (80%, if I recall correctly) Garamond, tightly tracked. It's pretty easy to simulate in a program like Illustrator or Quark.

    newsreader?

Um, I just tried gnus... I think I'll stick to tin. (I guess if you're used to emacs gnus is a good option, though)

    newsreader?

Well, I use rtin, but I have a feeling that's not te answer you're looking for... (for the record, tin works like a dream in OSX, and builds easily) I tried (and hated hated hated) Thoth.

TV addicts dream cool as f**k

Wow... nice. Quick question -- which TV card are you using w/ Sorenson Broadcaster? I've got an old IX/TV card but obviously software support for that puppy is next to nonexistent these days.

A sure way to crash OSX

I've seen this too. I think what's happened is that the Netinfo process has dies, and since OSX uses Netinfo for _everything_...

Mozilla dowloads in a modal window!

File a bleeping bug instead of whining about it here, where nobody cares, then. Of ALL the browsers available for the Mac, Mozilla has the most open development process. If there is a problem with Mozilla, you can file a bug against it, and actually watch (via Bugzilla) whether progress...

    How to enable focus-follows-mouse?

How to? Install X11 and some godawful WM, I guess. Otherwise, yecch, I'm with Endian. In all seriousness, though, I haven't seen any such hack yet for OS X.

    best FTP client?

Geez, people, there are TONS of good FTP clients for OSX. In addition to the aforementioned Interarchy and Fetch, there's also Panic's Transmit, and RBrowser is nice too. Working from the terminal, NcFTP 3.03 is my favorite for interactive use, and curl and wget are awesome for...

New Flash plugin = total lock up

Okay, off to the OS X feedback page... I suggest we all file bugs against this -- a simple web page should not have the ability to lock up the most advanced OS on the planet, n'est ce pas?

New Flash plugin = total lock up

Has anyone confirmed that this still happens in 10.0.4? (I'd try it, but I'm a fraidy cat...)

I've run into this as well. Has anyone at Apple, MS or Macromedia acknowledged this (really nasty) bug?

    Whatever happened to Terminal Services?

Some of you who were around in the Public Beta days might have used Terminal Services. i.e. you could highlight a chunk of text in a Cocoa application and execute a unix command using the selected text as a parameter. Very handy. Unfortunately, I just realized that Apple seems to have...

OmniWeb - What am I missing?

The rendering engine is currently the fastest available on OSX (in my subjective opinion), and standards-compliant to boot. Once somebody wraps it in a nice Cocoa front end it'll be nearly unstoppable.
