    "Return Address" Label maker

I need a program to make fixed labels. I don't need "mail merge" stuff, just the same contents replicated, say, 30 times on, say, a sheet of Avery 5960 labels. I know how to do it once using Word, maybe even using Pages or Address Book. But then I might need to change the label, and I don't...

Mavericks is a major - well, rather large - disappointment.

I took Cheryl's advice and upgraded to 10.9.1 when it became available. Things are a little better, but there's still lots to do.

    Upgrade 10.6.8 to 10.9.1

Thanks, DeltaMac. I got the impression from somewhere that a recovery partition is created only when the target disk is empty. If a normal install of Mavericks over Snow Leopard will create and populate it, OK. It's just that I get an itch between by shoulder blades when anyone, including...

    Upgrade 10.6.8 to 10.9.1

My wife's iMac is running 10.6.8. I would like to upgrade her to Mavericks and have already prepared a thumb drive with DiskMaker X. As part of the process, I would like to create a recovery partition to use in emergencies going forward. My tentative process is Back up! Boot from an...

iWork '13 has just been updated

The new Pages can "export" to the old Pages. I discovered this during a frustration induced tantrum and managed to get one document back into a workable form.

iWork '13 has just been updated

Thanks for the tip. I didn't look at /Applications, but the older versions are still there in "iWork '09". However, now that I have "updated" several documents, I doubt that they can be opened by the earlier programs.

iWork '13 has just been updated

Well, this is interesting. I just started a thread about my personal disappointment with Mavericks in general, Pages and Numbers in particular.

Mavericks is a major - well, rather large - disappointment.

For me, anyway - I suppose your mileage may vary. Everything has slowed down, especially Pages and Numbers. With Pages, for example, formerly it would bounce 3 times in the Dock and come open and ready - total 15 secs. Now it still bounces 3 times, but it is not responsive for 30-40 secs...

Slow Time Machine backup to Time Capsule

I wasted Thu and Fri trying mightily to find a magic solution, but I only made things worse. Sat AM, I found a backup in progress and waited (im)patiently. It finally finished in a total time of just under four hours. So, I performed one more SuperDuper backup and ... With the Time Capsule...

Slow Time Machine backup to Time Capsule

I let it go overnight, but the incrementals are now taking longer than ever. So I waited impatiently for one to finish and turned off TM. I have started the clean install process. No, I have never used DU on anything on the Time Capsule. I tried this morning, from the 10.6.8 machine via...

Slow Time Machine backup to Time Capsule

OK, back to the struggle. I applied the combo update and let TM start up again, without relocating the TC. It took 3.5 hours to backup 844mb. Before it was struggling to backup 150mb in 2 hours, so I guess it's progress. It still is doing the backup in one big chunk and a second little...

Slow Time Machine backup to Time Capsule

In the context of the last few posts, I mean power it off to move it to another room so I can wire directly it to the other Mac. It's already on a power strip here in its usual place.

Slow Time Machine backup to Time Capsule

I did that yesterday but I'm away from that machine until Thursday. DeltaMac & Satcomer: What is the approved method to shutdown a Time Capsule?

Slow Time Machine backup to Time Capsule

I will apply the combo etc. this Thursday. Regarding CCC ... I take an SD incremental early every morning M-F. Yes, this is directly connected. But before using SD, I tried to use the same disk for a new full TM. After 4 hours, the progress meter showed around 1% complete. The...

Slow Time Machine backup to Time Capsule

From my original post ... The first full backup to the Time Capsule took about 10 hours, as I remember. The total for a full backup is/was 140gb = 140000mb. The current incremental total is around 140mb, or 0.1% of the full. Using that ratio, the incremental should take only a few seconds...

Slow Time Machine backup to Time Capsule

Yes. It does not seem to affect it. Yes, but not only that. My concern is that the backups for this mac may be garbage, that an OSX upgrade will be based based on garbage.

Slow Time Machine backup to Time Capsule

First, the good news. MDS isn't crashing now. The bad news. A standard backup still takes 2 hours to handle 150mb. The console shows far fewer weird messages. The following pair is now predominant. 9/13/13 11:22:42 AM | Sep 13, 2013 mDNSResponder[20] ERROR: mDNSPlatformWriteTCP - send...

Slow Time Machine backup to Time Capsule

Yesterday evening, I turned off Time Machine, and followed the directions to reset the SpotLight database. Early this morning I turned Time Machine back on. See console log below. It took two hours to complete. Four minutes later it started again. mdworker complains. Looking in earlier...

Slow Time Machine backup to Time Capsule

See the console log below. Does this mean the Spotlight database is corrupted? After churning away for 42 minutes, MDS crashed; then again after 30 minutes. Finally it claimed to finish normally an hour after the last crash. I feel sick. 3:02:13 com.apple.backupd[18828] Attempting to mount...
