With photoshop, I would even suggest 2 gigs of ram.
The only issue with the mini is gaming where the screen is redrawn quickly from frame a to frame b. The mini's graphic system just isn't up to par for that.

Sounds like you have cross linked files on your external drive. Meaning, you will need to pickup Diskwarrior or another utility to repair those files.
is it a 10 or 100 meg network? Can you pickup a GIG switch? They are pretty cheap now...what network protcols are turned on for each PC? Appletalk? TCPIP...? What about on the server?

the cage connector is very cool, but you must match the correct 'connectors' to the motherboard. As much as I like this feature, it sucks as you cannot add ATA or other drives to the same slots.
The reverse is true too. If the drive is formated for MAC, windows cannot read it natively. There are 3rd party tools which allows windows machines to read/write to Mac (HPFS) drives, but not natively.
So, if you are going between mac and windows, fat32 is the right format.
