External Hard Drive wrong files open

I have noticed that some files (but not all) on my portable firewire hard drive have a scrambled directory. The affected files show as one type of application. When I open the files, they launch under a different application and show as completely different files. For example a pdf file of a drawing will open as an excel spreadsheet showing a spreadsheet I made earlier and that was stored in a different folder.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? I tried looking at my backup and it has the same problem. I tried rebuilding the desk top. I also tried using disk utility.
 
What version of Mac OS are you using? OS9? OS X?

Sounds like you have cross linked files on your external drive. Meaning, you will need to pickup Diskwarrior or another utility to repair those files.
